HutchFan Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Sorry to hear this news, but I'm grateful for the music. R.I.P. Quote
felser Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 R.IP. 98 years old, quite a run. A very distinctive player! I have all of his 50's/60's BN work and a smattering of other titles by him. Was he the last of the 50's BN cornerstones? Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Impossible to act surprised but what a great life and spirit. Long live LD. Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 (edited) One of the last of the old-school class of greasy bebop. He made a lot of records that I’ve enjoyed and I’m going to put one of them on right now. Edited November 11 by ghost of miles Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 RIP 😭 those recent photos are great, good to see he was loved a lot by his surrounding community in NYC. Blue Note Records, would be alongside Signature or Commodore Records in significance and popularity had it not been for him. We all will miss him forever. Quote
mjzee Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 RIP. As someone here said, perhaps it was inevitable, but sad and poignant nonetheless. A life well lived. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Lou was a sweetheart! Back in 1981 when I was chairman of the Chicago Jazz Festival, I put together a Jimmy Smith Jam and Lou was part of the band. Over rehearsals, sound check and performance I had occasion to introduce Lou to my 2 children at different times. When Lou met my second child, he chuckled and said "I feel much better now - this one is yours for sure". Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 I'm sorry to hear this. What a life and career. The first time I met Dr. Lonnie Smith, he was playing with Lou Donaldson at The Firefly Club in Ann Arbor, MI. As a 20 something year old kid, I didn't really understand how the bass pedals were used in jazz organ playing and Dr. Lonnie set me straight. I worked up the courage to go talk to him after the gig and he sat me right down on the bench and showed me the technique. I got to meet Lou then, too. He was a sweet, gentle man with a wicked sense of humor, which is reflected in his music. I love so many of those Blue Note organ records he did. Alligator Boogaloo. Mr Shing-a-Ling, Good Gracious!, Midnight Creeper, Natural Soul, etc. What a legend. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 Lou made fun records in many styles, serious fun. And he brought Horace Silver and Grant Green to BN. IIRC he played on early recordings of both Round Midnight and Bags Groove. You could do comps of him doing R&B covers (and singing on them!) and playing Charlie Parker tunes and playing pretty on standards, and all 3 would be great. Quote
RiRiIII Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 RIP. We were happy to see him and Lonnie Smith here in Athens 2 or times. Quote
Pim Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 R.I.P. Mr Donaldson. You’ve lived quite a life. Thanks for the music Quote
trane_fanatic Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 (edited) RIP Lou. Who is still with us from that era? Sonny, Roy Haynes, Reggie Workman, Terry Gibbs... Who else? Edited November 11 by trane_fanatic Quote

sidewinder Posted November 11 Report Posted November 11 (edited) This is very sad to hear but what a great life and career that Mr Donaldson had. It's over 20 years ago now but so glad I got the chance to see him with Dr Lonnie Smith. RIP - and 'fusion, not con-fusion'. Edited November 11 by sidewinder Quote
