JSngry Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 I sure hope somebody did a good oral history with him... RIP Quote
Peter Friedman Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 Back in about 1965 I was still living in Detroit. I used to go see the George Bohanon Quintet playing at a club, whose name escapes me. It was good hard bop oriented music. Quote

felser Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 RIP. Really enjoyed his work with Chico Hamilton. Quote
sidewinder Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) Sad to hear this, RIP. I saw him on one occasion in the trombone section of a Gillespie Tribute big band back in the 90s. That section also had Jimmy Cleveland in it, if I remember rightly and Melba Liston was sitting in the section (but not playing). Will dig out his Motown/Workshop Jazz LP for a spin. Rabshakeh Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 (edited) I hadn't realised until today that George Bohanon was not The same person as disco hitmaker Bohannon. I had always struggled to understand why his discography was comparatively meagre. Edited November 11, 2024 by Rabshakeh Quote
JSngry Posted November 10, 2024 Report Posted November 10, 2024 Hamilton Bohannon was the hitmaker. Although considering the number of Motown dates George did, he probably was on more hits than Hamilton! Quote

Plenty of other jazz guys had very successful disco careers at the time so it made sense to me, save that I couldn't understand why GB had so few leader dates if he was such a feature of the disco scene. clifford_thornton Posted November 11, 2024 Report Posted November 11, 2024 that's too bad. RIP, excellent trombonist. Quote
