Chuck Nessa Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 How many here caught Coltrane "Live"? Event details and impressions appreciated. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 I heard Ravi just once — in the summer of 2000 (July, iirc) at whatever jazz fest was at Penn Valley Park in Kansas City back then (Kansas City International Jazz Festival, probably). Strong set, iirc — just a quartet. Reminded me more of Joe Henderson than of his dad — which I kinda liked, actually. Quote
medjuck Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 (edited) Saw him with the quartet in a large Montreal club . Before June'65 but not sure when. I sat on the side of stage next to Elvin so I couldn't hear Jimmy. I don't remember anything except that I was enthralled. Edited November 4, 2024 by medjuck Quote
jlhoots Posted November 4, 2024 Report Posted November 4, 2024 (edited) Jazz Workshop, Boylston Street, Boston, mid-60's Expanded group, 2 drummers, more saxophone players, "raised the roof". Edited November 4, 2024 by jlhoots Quote

mjazzg Posted November 5, 2024 Report Posted November 5, 2024 (edited) I think "Geezer" might have a different meaning over here, a bit shady, on the make possibly illegally, with an element of roguish charm. Maybe not! "Old geezer" is specific and slightly different. An old one of those above but more commonly generically used for old man, affectionately Divided by a common language again... Rabshakeh Posted November 5, 2024 Report Posted November 5, 2024 Yep. I had to Google what it might have meant to a US audience. I guess the British equivalent would be something like "Codger Question". Quote
JSngry Posted November 5, 2024 Report Posted November 5, 2024 What about Geezil, as in Minerva? Quote

JSngry Posted November 5, 2024 Report Posted November 5, 2024 Minerve, sorry. My phone is starting to think for itself... Harold "Geezil" Minerve, late-period Ellington altoist. Quote

I agree, Ravi doesn't sound all that much like his dad. But that's a subject for another thread! Quote
JSngry Posted November 5, 2024 Report Posted November 5, 2024 I heard Ravi kinda live (live streamed due to weather) at the last Detroit Jazz festival doing a tribute to Alice with Brandee Younger and a string section. Mention was made of an upcoming tour, so check your local newspapers. It weren't none too bad! Quote
