Miles Davis — May 26, 1958 session (pre-KOB, with the KOB line-up)

I’ve never owned the “Legacy Edition” 2CD version of KOB, and haven’t even thought about it in a decade or more (if I ever even thought of it at all).

But for no particular reason I looked it up online today, to remind myself what all was on the 2nd CD (because I couldn’t for the life of me remember, and I thought it was all live stuff) — but come to find out that most of it is all studio stuff from this May 26, 1958 session…

https://www.plosin.com/milesahead/Sessions.aspx?s=580526

So how I’m trying to remember where all I might have first had these tracks back in the 90’s (before the Complete Miles & Trane a Columbia box, which I do have, but it’s buried in a box under several other boxes of CD’s at the moment).

Some of the ‘hype’ for this “Legacy” set says it brings together all the songs from that May 26th session “for the first time!!” — the only session besides KOB to feature all those same musicians.

Peter Losin’s wonderful site does list all the various releases (by catalog number) for each of those tracks… but I’m trying to wrap my head around where all most or all of them would have been most commonly found?

(If you click on the plosin url for that session above, there’s a mountain of different catalog numbers for every track, none of which are linked so you can click on them and see what they actually are).

I imagine I probably had most (even all?) of this session quite early in my collecting — but my mind is drawing a complete blank as to what releases they might have been most readily available on BEFORE the release of the Complete Miles & Trane Columbia box.

I’m seeing “Love For Sale” was on the Circle in the Round 2LP comp — but to my surprise, none of it is on the similar Directions 2LP comp.

Maybe I did have some or all of them, but if I did, I sure can’t remember where any more.

(The 90’s seems like eons and eons ago, I’m afraid!)

I can't speak towards your memory. I don't remember one either other than some appearances of tracks a bit before on comps. That 1974 date is clearly stated in wikipedia. May be wrong. It may be referring to a Japanese release as well, as it notes CBS/Sony, but does reference Teo as producer.

The 1973 Basic Miles LP would be the US source for what of those tracks were reissued.

Mildly off topic, but why did Jazz Track go out of print, while the vast majority of Miles' Columbia catalog remained readily available for decades?

Maybe/Probably something to do with the soundtrack rights?

The Miles catalog was somewhat neglected by Columbia for a good part of the '70's.  Kind Of Blue was a "Nice Price" LP, Milestones was only available in rechanneled stereo, the Blackhawk LPs were only available on their super-budget imprint (so budget that they didn't use inner sleeves), etc.  It was only when Miles was on his 4-year "sabbatical" and Columbia needed product to release that they started reexamining his catalog.

Hard to understand why Columbia "hid" those cuts for so long

Yeah, definitely my thought too.

How Columbia never came up with even a halfway prominent release of it for several decades is sort of hard to believe — not thinking of the strength of the session (opinions probably vary) — but because of who was on it.

Note:

The issued version of "Stella by starlight" is based on take 7 using the first up solo from take 3 on all issues except Columbia CK47835 [CD], which has the only complete version of take 7 as shown above.
Columbia 88697-33552-2 titled "Kind of Blue 50th Anniversary Collectors Edition"; this is a 2 LP set.
Columbia 88697-47627-2 [CD] titled "Kind of Blue".
Poll Winners (Eu)PWR27208 [CD] titled "Kind of Blue".
American Jazz Classics (Sp)90259 [CD] titled "Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue".
All issued titles, except (*), also on CBS/Sony SOPM140, 20AP-1401, Columbia/Legacy 88697-52492-2 [CD].
All issued titles, except (*), also on Essential Jazz Classics (Sp)EJC11417 [CD] titled "More Miles".
All issued titles, except (*), also on Poll Winners (Sp)PWR27385 [CD].
Some sources incorrectly show Philly Joe Jones on drums. This was Jimmy Cobb's first recording with Davis.
Col CK47835 [CD] = 467918 [CD] titled "'58 Sessions"; see September 9, 1958 for the rest of these CDs.
All issued titles also on Columbia/Legacy C6K65833 [CD].

NOTE: CL 1268 = Jazz Track (3 tracks on side B of LP)
