medjuck
Great piece about Stinson that features long quote from out own David Brett Johnson: https://thebluemoment.com/2024/10/25/the-lost-genius-of-albert-stinson/comment-page-1/?unapproved=42579&moderation-hash=1f43a4ed4550a0617e96470226ef1935#comment-42579

mjazzg
Yes, I just read that too. Does anyone know how good the sound quality is on the Davis at Harmon Gymnasium recording? clifford_thornton
Definitely, he always has been. I've never heard the Davis set with Stinson. Diving in now (albeit through computer speakers) Edited October 25 by clifford_thornton

Rooster_Ties
April 7th, 1967 — one of the last handful of times Miles played “So What” — with Stinson.

Pedantic point - it’s one of the final *recordings* we have of Miles playing “So What” (there are 3 more after this one, stretching into early 1969), but I’m sure he played it a lot more often than that. The jazz club residencies, when he probably played it, are underrepresented relative to other venues in our recorded evidence.

I've never seen a photo of Stinson before. I see that Bobby Hutcherson's ‘Now’ was a memorial to Stinson. I don't really know much about bass playing, but when playing with Miles, I feel that Stinson's playing is more orthodox, or like a steady jazzy walking style. On the other hand, when comparing him to others, you can see the uniqueness of Ron Carter, who seems ordinary but is actually very individualistic.
