Yes, I just read that too.

Does anyone know how good the sound quality is on the Davis at Harmon Gymnasium recording?

seems to be an abbreviated part of the set, but it is something. Acceptable sound, fierce performance.

What differences do you hear due to Stinson replacing Carter?  Great article, btw.

April 7th, 1967 — one of the last handful of times Miles played “So What” — with Stinson.

Pedantic point - it’s one of the final *recordings* we have of Miles playing “So What” (there are 3 more after this one, stretching into early 1969), but I’m sure he played it a lot more often than that.

The jazz club residencies, when he probably played it, are underrepresented relative to other venues in our recorded evidence.

Great writing indeed.   I've never seen a photo of Stinson before.  I see that Bobby Hutcherson's ‘Now’ was a memorial to Stinson.

I don't really know much about bass playing, but when playing with Miles, I feel that Stinson's playing is more orthodox, or like a steady jazzy walking style. On the other hand, when comparing him to others, you can see the uniqueness of Ron Carter, who seems ordinary but is actually very individualistic.

Good observation ....
