I saw Herb and Lani about 10 years ago, and he was playing great. But I never thought he would do a Tijuana Brass tour again!

I think it was seven years ago that I happened to be in San Jose in the summer and went to see the San Jose Jazz Fest. When I heard the song “Bitter Sweet Samba” (which almost every Japanese know without the song title because it is the theme song of a famous radio program in Japan), I thought it might be a copy band of Tijuana Brass, but it was Herb Alpert himself. Is he already 90 years old or something?

89. He is playing Lincoln Center on his 90th birthday.

Presumably, a combination of older, original fans and younger hipsters. I'll let you know. I suspect the crowd in Sarasota will skew toward the blue-haired demographic.

It was Hurricane Milton that really hit Sarasota with 10-12 inches of rain.  The Van Wezel is/was the venue for the annual Joys of Jazz concerts featuring Dick Hyman's pals and Concord label artists.

This is the most I've ever spent to see an artist whose albums I never paid more than a dollar for.

My parents had his albums when I was a kid and I played them a lot but it’s not something that appeals to me anymore.

My overriding TJB memory is that some AC company used one of their songs for their between innings scoreboard ads in the Astrodome. In the late 60s, the music was not hi-fi, but what there was of it was cavernous. Couple that with how the TJB was already out of fashion, and the overall effect was just creepy and ghoulish.

So I don't get it. But apparently a lot of people do, so I hope they have a good time!

My own interest stems from my commitment to supporting live jazz, especially when played by an 89-year-old who undoubtedly could use the gig money to supplement his social security income.

Tickets arrived today!

Hopefully, it will be legal to see music from Tijuana after this January!  😹

Herb was advised to change the name to the Tubingen Brass or the Tyumen Jazz Band .
