cayetano Posted October 1, 2024 Report Posted October 1, 2024 "Universal Music Recordings and Decca Records are making Jamaican/British jazz saxophonist Joe Harriott’s album ‘Movement’ available again for the first time since it was released in 1964." https://recordstore.co.uk/products/movement-vinyl-lp-1 Quote
colinmce Posted October 1, 2024 Report Posted October 1, 2024 Not really true, I've had this CD since it came out in 2012: Quote
mjazzg Posted October 1, 2024 Report Posted October 1, 2024 Any new Harriott is good news, hopefully this indicates that the Universal/Decca reissue programme isn't as dead as feared Quote

clifford_thornton Posted October 1, 2024 Report Posted October 1, 2024 I've seen more copies of Hum Dono offered for sale than I have Movement... the original is exceedingly rare. No, I don't have either... Quote
sidewinder Posted October 1, 2024 Report Posted October 1, 2024 (edited) This is a surprise. Even though I have an original, I will go for this one. Good to have a spare for regular spins and sonically it should be good too. Ironically, I got my original copy when in Japan ! Never ever seen it for sale in the UK (other than one online copy over 20 years ago). A rare occurrence of scarce UK jazz LP returning home.. I could do with 'High Spirits' on vinyl so maybe they will join hands and summon that one up next. Of note - the original was in mono only. This one will be in stereo and uses a 24/192 copy from the original stereo master tape, apparently. Edited October 1, 2024 by sidewinder Quote
adh1907 Posted October 1, 2024 Report Posted October 1, 2024 The Vocalion CD reissue was also billed as ‘first time in stereo’. A good album. A mix of free form tracks and more straightforward tracks. High Spirits , the other album on the CD reissue is a strange one. Tunes based on a musical version of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. I have only ever seen one beat up copy of Movement (never High Spirits) and even then a lot of money was being asked. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 2, 2024 Report Posted October 2, 2024 Don't recall ever having seen 'High Spirits'. A copy sold on eBay recently apparently for about £1.5k ! As mentioned, a tie-in with the Coward music so I guess Denis Preston must have been trying to raise sales and profile of the Quintet. As with 'Movement' for any copies out there there seems to be a high percentage of factory samples. Quote

It sure is!! received my copy a couple of days ago & have listened twice so far - the music is not new to me, purchasing the Vocalion twofer a few years back but sonically this LP is a blast - cover sticker proclaims "Vinyl audio remastered & cut from the original master tapes by Abbey Road" Also contains an informative (for the uninitiated) inner 12x12 info sheet that is actually readable (unlike the recent Bird In Kansas City CD booklet notes) encouraging note in the top review in Discogs https://www.discogs.com/release/32019632-The-Joe-Harriott-Quintet-Movement "W.S Nov 16, 2024 I was fortunate enough to assist Universal in this release by loaning my original pressings for the artwork. They've done a really great job, such a great series. I've also loaned a few more original British jazz albums to them and there's some great plans in the mix for the future. Exciting times!" Quote
