Yes.  The American Quartet was playing there when Lee Morgan was shot.

One of the 1965 Charles Lloyd recordings on Manhattan Stories (Resonance) is from Slugs.

thanks. Figured Lloyd had, too. I don't really listen to Lloyd but good to know that performance is out there.

It’s a good performance.  A nice bridge between R&B and non-extreme avant garde jazz.

Agreed. Not the biggest Lloyd fan either, but it's a good listen and an interesting slice of history.

$33 on CD from Amazon, seems to be the same from Dusty. Just saw it at Euclid Records for $38 here in St. Louis (flying out from visiting my dad this week). Blue Note web site is $33 (plus shipping, or free shipping if you buy north of $85).

Anybody got a line on anywhere that has this cheaper on CD??

($33 is kind of highway robbery, if you ask me.)

I listen to it via Apple Music streaming, I can hear bass.  But somewhat muffled.  It reminds me of Dexter Gordon's "The Squirrel".

listened via spotify yesterday and agree, during the bass solos it's good, otherwise, I could mainly feel it but not that much more...

I listened to the whole thing. Overall, I think it's a DeJohnette show. The drums have tremendous drive. Henderson is also great, especially on the first song. McCoy seems a bit overwhelmed. The bass isn't really audible.

I had a very similar reaction. I streamed it yesterday while walking, and txt’d a friend that Jack D really shines (first thing I said), and that Joe was really on fire too — that first song especially.

$28 as the low price for a double CD seems outrageous to me.

Totally agree, but I just caved and ordered one from mega-eBay seller get_importCDs — who has an automatic 25% off two or more items going thru the end of today/Sunday (and I got something else for my wife).

So with get_importCDs’ free shipping, the McCoy/Joe ended up being $28 plus sales tax — and the other title for my wife ended up essentially matching Amazon’s current quite cheap price (of $11).

But, yeah, even $28 is pretty damn high, imho — though I understand the packaging has quite extensive liners (but still, $28, sheesh!!)

You can get this as a hi res download from Presto for $14.50.  So how is the book/documentation?  Worth the dough?

It's a little pricey for 1:26:25 of music.  Could almost go on one cd.  Sounds like they have deluxe packaging and booklet.

I'm listening to this now on spotify.  Some good playing but the bass is boomy and I guess amplified with a pickup.  So to me it is bass heavy and worse, the amplification erases the natural tone and character of the bass, sounds like an electric bass.  There is a general sense of recording level set too high, everything muddy and edging into distortion.  Not totally sure I will listen to this more than once, may not buy...

Postscript: I cannot even make it through the whole album on spotify!  The bass is too overwhelming and ruins it for me.  Because of the amplification the bass sustains strongly, so there is no drop off in volume between notes, just a continuous thumping behind the horn and drums.  Plus the dynamics generally are bad: everybody (except the piano) playing as loud as they can all at once.  Won't be buying this, though these are some of my favorite musicians.

Listening to the CD; the bass recording of Henry Grimes is perfectly fine and clearly audible throughout. Compared to any other Live at Slugs recording I've heard, this has the best sound quality by far. The first CD is fantastic.

Interesting to read this markedly different impressions about bass sound 🧐🤔 ....
