Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz #279 – 11 CDs

I'm not sure what is up with that inclusion, maybe the booklet will explain, maybe not. Peanuts was an interesting fellow, I met him in San Antonio on the Riverwalk hanging with Jim Cullum's band, he was having fun!

There are actually many other examples of tracks included that were never released as V-Discs.  I suspect now that the Fats Waller omission might be due to the fact that the masters for these tracks are apparently missing.

Mine arrived today.  As I was ripping the files to disk I remarked to myself how well the metadata on internet music databases had been entered.  It was set up as a multi-disk collection of items by 'various artists' and each track contained the title of the performer or group (of which there are a great many). Beautifully done!  And then it all ran out on disk 6.  Oh dear.  I typed in the metadata myself for disk 6 which is quite an undertaking because of the way Mosaic displays the data in two lists: a track list which has the song titles and a discography which is detailed about the performer/group for each track (but unfortunately the track order in the two lists is often not the same).  Hmnnn...... maybe I'll listen to the first few disks, wait on 7-11, and hope whoever did 1-5 keeps it up...

For a few days only disc 1 was entered - I waited and more were there today. I'm certain the balance will show up soon.

I entered all of the data myself for all 11 discs.   It used to be easy to convey that information to the database.  But I don't see how to do it anymore.

I think a lot of these player software programs like itunes actually submit whatever you type in to Gracenote.  So you may have finished the job for all of us!

-Well, maybe not.  Disc 7 still shows no data for me.

My "ripping" software did not find any data associated with the discs. I did not find an entry in Discogs (at the time - and did not have the courage to create one), so I copied the information from Mosaic's website into Excel, and cleaned it up. Here is the file (text, with columns separated by semi-colons) with the disc number, track number, and titles:

https://storage.googleapis.com/cloudplayer/samples/mp3tag.txt

I then imported the track titles into my "tags" using a tagging software (MP3Tag).

Could be useful to others...

Since then, someone created a Discogs entry:

https://www.discogs.com/release/32107818-Various-Classic-V-Disc-Small-Group-Jazz-Sessions

My tagging software can import Discogs entries to fill in the titles, but the "Medleys" screw everything up, as they are identified as separate sub-tracks on Discogs.

I have designed my own "app" to add information, such as credits and comments, to my music collection, and it looks like this:

image.jpeg.4364a6bbc3cbfc2d1a6511e5a129908f.jpeg

It takes a few hours to enter all this, but I like to have the credits "on line" (and use them to search my collection).

I have been really enjoying the first Red Norvo session here with Mildred Bailey.   It reminds me that I need to listen to them more often.

Looking forward to that material. Just resumed listening to disc 2… really enjoying the Muggsy Spanier session with Bud Freeman and Peanuts Hucko. (And I see there’s some Peanuts-led material coming up on disc 4.)

You are 1000%. It has gotten SO much better than years ago. I've got mine in the listening queue so hopefully, all of it will be online before I get to it.

It's a great set but I like the Spanier with Pee Wee even better  because, well, Pee Wee.

As is often the case, I'm confused.  In the booklet for Discs V-V111 at the bottom of the listings for session Y (Bobby Hackett) it says  "note: This session is heard in it's entirety and in the order in which it was recorded on Disk III."  huh, isn' that what they've just listed for disc VI?

That is probably just a typo

I'm up to disk five now.  Really enjoying the set!

On disc 5 as well, in the middle of the Martha Tilton/Jack Leonard session and almost to the Tatum sides. As others have said, the sound on this set is immaculate… and what a wealth of 1940s jazz that I’ve never heard before. Can’t wait for the big band box that will complement this one.

You're in for some treats: I think Peanuts appears on more cuts here than anyone else.

the first spoken intro/breakdown by Mildred Bailey & the response from the band (disc IV, track 19 - see p 11 of booklet) is priceless. The following Bailey/Wilson duet is wonderful.

The Clark Terry session (only 3 tracks) is one of my favs - sounds so much more "contemporary" than much of the older style jazz.

SQ is exceptional - what a remarkable achievement (have compared to earlier CD releases of this material)
