JSngry Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 I thought that this one was schmaltzy until I was called upon to play it. It's masterful. And this is not a "Stevie Wonder song", but hey... Quote
hopkins Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 So many good songs in that list. "Black Man" has always been a favorite with its intricate percussions. Superwoman as well, especially the slower part starting at around 3 min into the song. This one is a favorite as well, but perhaps due to memories of listening to it with my girlfriend in college Quote

Great versions by Syreeta and Gary Bartz. Quote

I'm a sucker for his "schmaltz" - I'll even admit to liking "I just called to say I love you"! Can't get schmaltzier than that... I only play it (and Luther Vandross as well) when my wife is not around - she can't stand it! Edited September 17 by hopkins Quote

felser Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 And "Another Star" is MIA, and "That Girl" is only #39. Quote

Great song, and lyrics as well: "For you there might be another star But through my eyes the light of you is all I see For you there might be another song But in my heart your melody will stay with me" Listening to it right now: the music in this song is really captivating. There's so much going on, so many different sounds, but all perfectly intertwined. Ken Dryden Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 I have never listened to much Stevie Wonder, though many of his songs have been recorded by jazz musicians. This is one of the best Stevie Wonder songbooks in my jazz collection: Marian McPartland enjoyed playing "All in Love is Fair." Quote

hopkins Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 Thanks for the link. Going down the YouTube rabbit hole as a result of this thread, I really enjoyed watching his version of "Spain" where his band takes turns soloing - his is worth watching, though it's very short: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxBNGA53DrW0qvjFHrLkaGaaoE_IssK4Ct?si=MvxFn_A3NqMETkFN Quote
mjzee Posted September 17 Report Posted September 17 This is a great version of this song, and was a minor hit in NYC: Quote

Somehow I missed this recording when it was released, thank you for sharing. I may have to seek out the 7" single for this (it's not on any of his albums). Quote

Never heard this, amazing how the song is reframed. Fabulous and goes to show what a great song it really is. Now if you post Johnny Cash singing it... Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted September 18 Report Posted September 18 I wonder how many of these Stevie's heard, the Prine especially. Quote
felser Posted September 18 Report Posted September 18 A number of good Stevie covers on this gem: Quote
