Teasing the Korean Posted September 10, 2024 Report Posted September 10, 2024 I started a thread some years ago in praise of the 70s twofer reissue jazz LPs (linked below). These albums were indispensable to me as a young person trying to acquire classic jazz at affordable prices. There is a sub-category of these twofers that I have a soft spot for, and these were albums that were made up exclusively of unreleased tracks and/or unedited tracks pulled from a range of albums/sessions. Examples would include the following, all from Columbia, circa 1979-81: Monk - Always Know Mingus - Nostalgia in Times Square Miles - Directions Given the fact that a CD holds basically two albums' worth of music, I'm assuming that most if not all of the unedited or previously unreleased tracks on these have appeared as bonus tracks on the expanded CD releases of the original albums/sessions. But considering the time/space limits on LPs, these compilations were worthy additions to catalogs. And some of them work very well as compilations in their own right. I played the above three albums to death. Are there other examples of these kinds of albums? Quote
medjuck Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 IIRC (and I often don't) not every cut on "Always Know" has been released on cd. Similarly not every cut on the Hal Wilmer produced Monk tribute 2Lp set "That's the Way I Feel Now" was included on the single cd release. (In both cases I burned a cd to replicate the double Lp from whatever cuts were on cd plus the ones on Lp only.) Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 (edited) All of "Always Know" has been reissued on cd. Both as "Always Know" and in separate releases. https://www.discogs.com/release/2549281-Thelonious-Monk-Always-Know Edited September 11, 2024 by jazzbo Quote

JSngry Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 What about the three volumes of impulse!'s The Definitive Jazz Scene? Most has been ported over, but all? Quote

JSngry Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 I know there's a cut by The Russian Jazz Quartet in there. Maybe a few more? A Tommy Flanagan cut? Quote
soulpope Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 Another thread could be "previously unreleased material edited substantially to fit in a VINYL ONLY release format" 🤯😎 .... Quote

mikeweil Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 That's the advantage of a Lord Disco subscription, these tracks are easy to find there. Not on CD was a Terry Gibbs track from Vol.1, A many Albam track from Vol.2, and that Russian Jazz Quartet from Vol.3. Quote
JSngry Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 Hardly reissueable? Reissueable? No idea ... Quote

The arrangements sounded really dumbed-down, as though impulse wanted some kind of a lame crossover album. Still, I'm not sure who or what the crossover audience for this album would have been. Quote

Chico O'Farrill's impulse! is better than that but it does sound like those two could have been safely paired. Quote

Well, you could pair Nine Flags and Spanish Rice, unless the latter was paired with another Clark Terry album. Quote
JSngry Posted September 12, 2024 Report Posted September 12, 2024 I think the arranger albums would be kept together. In fact, I think I did that from blog DLs back in the day. It ended up being a uniquely unified unsatisfying listening quasi-experience. Quote

I'd have to check closely to locate LP compilations that clearly have been made obsolete by more thoroughly "curated" CD sets (but no doubt there are many). BUT - I'd disagree with your above statement. I remember there were many 2-LP sets from the 70s/80s that were part of "complete" reissue programs, but the playing time of each of these clearly exceeded the CD time limits. And at least for quite some time the majors owning the music did not see fit to go to the trouble of doing corresponding CD reissues that REALLY would have made the LPs 100% obsolete. Some of these included IIRC those 70s Bluebird twofers of RCA reissues from the Swing era. Quote
