Dan Gould Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 I have no details but Loren Schoenberg has stated on FB that Russell Malone has died. He would have turned 61 in November. RIP. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 Very sorry to hear this. He was much too young. Quote
jlhoots Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 Yikes - R.I.P. - he was supposed play in New Mexico in September. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 I go to hear him just one or two times, the last I recall being in Toronto during IAJE with Benny Green. This is really sad, he was a great player and entertainer. Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 23 Author Report Posted August 23 I understand he was touring with Ron Carter and had a heart attack in Japan. Quote
Brad Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 @Fer Urbina mentioned this on Twitter. He was on tour with Ron Carter and Donald Vega. Unbelievable. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 Oh my ..... much too young. Excellent guitarist. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 This is shocking. I was just talking with him in April at Birdland. He had lost a lot of weight and looking great. Quote
JSngry Posted August 23 Report Posted August 23 We should take comfort that a really fine player seemed to always have good, well-paying gigs. Isn't always the case. RIP Quote
kh1958 Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 That's terrible. I saw him with Ron Carter a couple of times, and the last time I saw Geri Allen. Quote
Coda Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 I really loved his music. He was special to me. 😢 Quote
mhatta Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 RIP. His playing with Benny Green was awesome. Malone was scheduled to appear at Blue Note Tokyo until the 23rd, but apparently died suddenly on the 22nd. However, Carter and his pianist did a show in Takasaki on the 24th without Malone. That's pure professionalism. Quote

On the 23rd Mr. Malone suffered a heart attack upon completion of our performance at Blue Note Tokyo. Donald Vega and I are completing this tour as a duo … in respect and honor of the memory Mr. Malone … this chair represents his presence. I will issue a statement in the coming weeks, when I can find the words, and I hope our musical community at large, and the individuals contacting me for commentary in articles, understand that I need this time. Hardbopjazz Posted August 25 Report Posted August 25 WKCR is doing a Russell Malone memorial broadcast. Quote
Milestones Posted August 25 Report Posted August 25 I missed this sad news. R.I.P., Russell--a fine jazz man. I enjoyed his work with Diana Krall, Ron Carter, and others. Quote
