Dan Gould
I have no details but Loren Schoenberg has stated on FB that Russell Malone has died. He would have turned 61 in November. RIP.

jlhoots
Yikes - R.I.P. - he was supposed play in New Mexico in September.
Ken Dryden
I go to hear him just one or two times, the last I recall being in Toronto during IAJE with Benny Green. This is really sad, he was a great player and entertainer.

Kevin Bresnahan
This is shocking. I was just talking with him in April at Birdland. He had lost a lot of weight and looking great.
JSngry
We should take comfort that a really fine player seemed to always have good, well-paying gigs. Isn't always the case. RIP
kh1958
That's terrible. I saw him with Ron Carter a couple of times, and the last time I saw Geri Allen.

mhatta
RIP. His playing with Benny Green was awesome. Malone was scheduled to appear at Blue Note Tokyo until the 23rd, but apparently died suddenly on the 22nd. However, Carter and his pianist did a show in Takasaki on the 24th without Malone. That's pure professionalism.

On the 23rd Mr. Malone suffered a heart attack upon completion of our performance at Blue Note Tokyo. Donald Vega and I are completing this tour as a duo … in respect and honor of the memory Mr. Malone … this chair represents his presence. I will issue a statement in the coming weeks, when I can find the words, and I hope our musical community at large, and the individuals contacting me for commentary in articles, understand that I need this time. Milestones
I missed this sad news. R.I.P., Russell--a fine jazz man. I enjoyed his work with Diana Krall, Ron Carter, and others.
