Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 hey if you guys don't start spelling his name right i think i might just start liking bill F R I S E L L again! Quote
Dr. Rat Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 i find most frissell UNBEARABLE & twee way beyond what all heterdox, polyglot, fusion-y whatfuckingever fake-"roots" dogshit needs to be. antidote: 1) ANY record w/Nels Cline. 2) ALL Buck Owens records w/Don Rich yr welcome, dr. clem Yes I like Nels Cline, as well. But he isn't doing anything remotely like Frisell that I can hear. The Buck Owens I haven't really checked into (though I've got some Merle Travis!). I've also heard that if you have some Coleman Hawkins records and a few M80s, you can sell your entire collection of Coltrane with a clean conscience. There's some sort of dogshit anti-PC trend which valorizes abusive closemindedness I'm sure you've fallen victim to. It doesn't become you! --eric Quote
Joe Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 (edited) I am anything but a Bill Frisell fan, but he does sound terrific on the latest Dave Douglas record -- STRANGE LIBERATION -- which is, I feel, otherwise kinda lackluster. But Frisell's playing is free of additives here, and it is THAT good... Joe Bob says check it out. Edited April 8, 2004 by Joe Quote
Dr. Rat Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I am far from a Frisell fan, but he does sound terrific on the latest Dave Douglas record -- STRANGE LIBERATION -- which is, I feel, otherwise pretty lackluster. Joe Bob says check it out. I'll second that. I had to check the cd at one point to make sure I hadn't actually stuck a Frisell album in there. Though, I don't think he saves it quite. --eric Quote
mikeweil Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I almost dare not say it, but I lost most of the hard bop stuff on Blue Note after listening to it for more than ten years. I had a complete 1500 series collection and sold most of it. I still can appreciate its contributions, but I'm afraid I've listened enough hours. But this happens to me all the time with many different types of music, so it may be only temporarily. Quote
JSngry Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I hesitate to ever say that I've lost something, because inevitably it turns up again sooner or later, usually later, after it's been replaced. Car keys, checkbooks, and "jazz-rock" horn bands from the late-60s/early-70s would be prime examples. Quote
Sundog Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 Pat Metheny Although I occasionally try to find him, and end up being more lost. Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 [...] Dave Douglas [...] ... Joe Bob says check it out. Douglas-fu. Quote

Guest akanalog Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 i feel the same way about the hard bop stuff. not the more progessive stuff on blue note-but for the most part i don't need to buy another blakey or horace silver album at this point. well, that's not totally true-but i don't have any sort of completist urge anymore for many blue note artists which i had a few years ago and i might in fact prefer to consolidate my collections by deciding which three or four albums by a certain artist i find to be the essential keepers and sell the rest.
