So did I

I miss Haden too, an important figure for me when I was first discovering Jazz, 'Ballad Of The Fallen' was one of my earliest exposures to the genre. It goes to the desert island with me

Also loved all his work with Ornette, and I think he also played on some tunes of Coltrane-Cherry.
Only sometimes, like on one tune from the Hillcrest live date with Paul Bley, Ornette and Cherry one of his long solos is a bit boring.....

He was one of my favorites. I recollect seeing him in a quartet with Joe Henderson (Caravan of Dreams), a duo with Paul Bley (Iridium), with Ornette Coleman/Pat Metheny/Denardo Coleman (Caravan of Dreams), and a group similar to the one on his Nocturne album (Iridium).

It was probably at the end of the nineties when I listened to him with the Quartet West in the Bischofsmühle in Hildesheim. Only at the end of the gig he was seen enjoying the applause - because he had played behind a paravent for health reasons!

I saw him do this same with QW in London, possibly the same tour

So what is Charlie Haden's best solo on record .... ? Would be interested aka (different) opinions are desired 🧐😇 ....

Very hard to choose, but I loved his playing on two tracks of Alan Shorter's Orgasm LP.

Interviewed Haden fairly early on in my jazz writing career and he was incredibly kind and fun to speak with, as well as politically engaged (naturally). I would imagine the LMO being a voice for the voiceless in places like Palestine/Israel, the Congo, and other areas right now, which is desperately needed.

Both Haden and Carla Bley are gone.

And are missed.

Charlie Haden & Christian Escoudé " Nuages" (All Life) 1979 .... Charlie Haden was masteful in the duo format (too) and this heartfelt session with Christian Escoudé is no exception to the rule .... not known by many ....

The Left Hand of God from Quartet West's Now is the Hour. Makes me cry every time.

Towering artist. A bounty of beautiful music.

Some favorites:
- Chet Baker´s live version of  Haden´s melancholic ballad "Ellen David (Nightfall)" with Ake Johansson trio "Live in Sweden"

- Duo with Kenny Barron "Night and the City"

- My dearest of all: "The Art of the Song" with Alan Broadbent´s hauntingly beautiful string arrangements, plus ravishing vocals by Shirley Horn and Bill Henderson.
And then Charlie´s fragile singing "Wayfaring Stranger" on the final cut...

Thnx .... nuanced selection ....
