And then there's the one with Bird, Willie Smith, and Benny Carter jamming with the Bat Cole Trio!

A free for all and free for all of you!

Anyone know if this is available on CD or streaming services?

I'm coming to this discussion late (been on vacation). I think it's great news. The V-Discs have been reissued all over the place for years, and the Vanguard material deserves to be reissued in an organized way. There are at least two cds worth of Vanguard things by Jimmy Rushing alone. I assume those will be part of these new sets?

As far as I have been able to determine No. You could inquire with Mosaic yourself; so far no one has supplied any of that information.

Were the Jubilee shows, or even numbers from them, issued as V-Discs?

I'll be interested to read the Mosaic books.  I do know that, while the Jubilee shows presented themselves as "live," much of the musical material was recorded in the studio beforehand.

Posted

Coincidentally, I just started listening to Resonance's Nat King Cole box.  This box includes some tracks from Jubilee shows.  No mention is made of any complications regarding their use, or of needing approval from the government.  Indeed, the credits mention "Episode #29 of AFRS Jubilee is newly transferred by United States Library of Congress."  Maybe the government simply doesn't care anymore.  The box was produced with permission of the Cole estate.

I haven't checked how much of the music that I already own on other releases, but I think that most, if not all, of the Art Tatum has appeared on various labels on LP and/or CD, along with the Fats Waller and Red Norvo. But Mosaic will have the best possible sound and excellent annotation.

I have the Tatum material on this:

Mosaic’s hoping to have the first Vanguard small-group box out in time for this year’s Christmas. So sayeth Mr. Wenzel this morning when I called to pre-order the V-Disc set.

Wait so I'm confused... I thought the box they just announced was a small-group box?? There's a second?

They just announced "Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions."  In December should come a Vanguard small-group box.  V-Disc is early '40's; Vanguard is mid-'50's.

Do you have any ideas about who will be featured in the Vanguard sets and roughly how many CDs?

An absolute treasure trove of material from 53-57 - looks like most of it has had official CD release in the past (Vanguard). Of most interest to me will be the Ted Brown session with Warne Marsh, hopefully (though unlikely) some previously unreleased tracks
