randyhersom
John Coltrane recorded with Jimmy Garrison Ravi Coltrane recorded with Matthew Garrison as part of Jack DeJohnette's band Terry Gibbs recorded with Alice McLeod Gibbs (later Coltrane) Gerry Gibbs recorded with Michelle Coltrane (Alice's daughter, John's stepdaughter) Any other examples of the children of collaborators collaborating? Rene McLean, Mtume and Kenny Drew Jr come to mind as other recorded second generation players. Actually I'd like hearing about other second generation artists even if they don't fit the thread title criteria.

Niko
there's a Chico Freeman album with Freddie Waits and a Von Freeman album with Nasheet Waits... that's, of course, crossing the generations...

T.D.
Mala Waldron was in the area recently, gave me an idea, so sleuthed: Mal Waldron, Reginald Workman Mala Waldron, Nioka Workman (they've played together live, but not recorded AFAIK) Edited June 7 by T.D. randyhersom
Amazon has 4 Firey String Sistas tracks available for streaming, each graced by a photo of the band. On the band's website Mala and Nioka are identified in the caption of the same photo. So they have recorded together, and are exhibit 3 of the second generation collaborators, along with the papa swap Niko identified. That reminds me of Maxine Roach as a second generation musician, and also Cody Moffett. Also Tyondai Braxton, who may be part of the only father son pair where I have seen both in concert separately. If Petra Haden comes back to Big Ears, I'll try to catch her this time. Memory fades, but I do think I saw Old and New Dreams once.

T.D.
Kenny Drew and John Coltrane (Blue Trane) Kenny Drew Jr. and Ravi Coltrane Thinking there could be an example including the Redmans (Dewey and Joshua), but haven't come up with one. Kevin Bresnahan
Steve Turre's Generations band has his son Orion on drums & Wallace Roney Jr on trumpet. Steve Turre and Wallace Roney played together quite a bit.

T.D.
Ray Copeland and Keith Copeland is another possible angle, but I don't have time to sleuth.
randyhersom
Woody's Delight on High Note is a qualifying recording for the fathers, so good find. Likewise Kenny Drew Jr Sextet. I haven't seen any sidemen that would qualify Doug Raney for the collaborators part, but few second generation jazz musicians have recorded that prolifically as a leader.
