rachel Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 (edited) Just like w/ men, I gave it another chance. What do I have better to do? I mean, I could be out clothes shopping or yelling at a guy to throw his CDs away. I'll probably keep watching and whining about how lame the whole thing is. LaToya has been one of my favorites all along; I'm sure she will do great professionally, but still!! Edited May 13, 2004 by rachel Quote
LAL Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 What? Is LaToya really out? That's it. I'm swapping my Idol nights for jazz nights. But, will be tuning in again next series for more 'torture'. Maybe another William Hung will turn up. Say, I heard they might get the contestants to do Bob Dylan and/or Paul McCartney songs in the finals of the 4th series, if there's one. Stay tuned. Quote
RDK Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Well so much for "easy money." Please, somebody, keep me away from Vegas at all costs! Oh well. Don't know why I'm so surprised. I hate to sound elitist - but hell, this is a jazz forum after all - but I always thought the great majority of the voting public were idiots... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 Well, my favorites are always gone by this point in the competition. I do think that La Toya was becoming a bit. . . boring. There I said it. She's a great singer. . . she belongs singing musicals on the screen or something. . . she'll do fine. But to keep Jasmine over her? It sure seems weird. Then again, to boot Jennifer Hudson and leave John Stephens in the lineup was whack. It seems a bit more whacky than usual this year. . . and that may be the thing that keeps me watching from this point on. . . . (That and my wife!) Quote
RDK Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Okay, fess up - who here actually votes? As much as I dig the show, I have never once voted. I'm content to sit on the sidelines and watch it go down, but I'm too lazy to vote. Who *does* vote? Likely a lot of kids with time on their hands. So I guess we deserve who we get... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Why the hell should any of us here vote?? People with power-dialers voting right and left, and kids hitting the redial button for 2 hours solid. You've probably got better odds trying to vote in Florida. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 My wife votes. . .but she's just a kid! (A 48 year young kid!) She votes for the two whose performances she likes most each week. . .She's quite good about that, doesn't always vote for the same people week by week. Last week she voted for La Toya and Fantasia. . . Quote
RainyDay Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 I predict Ms. DeGarmo will win. She's the same age as the target audience, and she's cute as a bug's ear (not that Latoya and Fantasia are not) in a sweet teen kind of way. That she has improved is admirable. That she still has a ways to go is not surprising. Have you ever heard Madonna sing live? There's a reason she always lip synchs on "live" TV. That's what people today like, the package, not the goods. Poor Jasmine is having the Peter Principle imposed on her. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 I don't think that's the purpose of voting, Lon. If someone has one bad performance-does that mean they aren't deserving anymore? Maybe Helen is part of the cadre that kept Howdy Doody in as long as he was-didn't he have a good night here or there? If people vote on that basis, I can see how the less talented might hang around much longer than they ought to. I think the idea is to vote for the best Idol, not the best weekly performance. But don't quote me, its not like I actually voted. I swear! Now, as to this week's results, I am completely stupefied and speachless. LaToya showed herself an exceptionally talented singer with great stage presence. To get booted, while the girls stick around? Give me a f-ing break. As Sinatra said to the hooker, I say to American Idol: "I'm through with you" Quote
jazzbo Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 It's just how Helen defines "her favorite". . . her favorite is the one that gives the best performance . . . .that worked for her, her favorites were changing week by week. It's not how I would have voted if I voted; I would have voted for Lea LaBelle and Jennifer Hudson til one or the other was bumped and then voted for the survivor til there was no more voting for that survivor. But Helen had hte phone! Quote
RDK Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Well, the "problem" is most likely that La Toya and Fantasia both had the same basic fan base, thereby splitting the votes. From what I understand, voting tends to be close. I remember when one of the Johns was voted off a few weeks back. Seacrest said that there were 26 million votes cast the night before. There were six contestants left at the time. And he said that John (who had the fewest number of votes that night) still had over 4 million votes. So that leaves less than two million votes split between six different people as the margin between them. Quote
Alexander Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 My wife's a regular viewer, and I occasionally catch a few minutes here and there. I watched the last fifteen minutes or so of last night's results show. So, LaToya's out. I'm not suprised, frankly. I think it's obvious that people are voting based on how "cute" the contestants are, and frankly the majority finds little white girls and little asian girls to be cuter than African American women. Pity really, because LaToya was the best looking of those four, and she could sing too. I predict that the little Leanne Rimes clone is going to win... Quote
RDK Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 Ah, hell, Alexander had to go and bring race into it. Seriously, I think you're completely right about the "cute" part, but I really don't think race had anything to do with it (other than the two divas, who happen to both be black, canceling each other out). Diana has *a lot* of teen fans - those with speed dialers and free time on their hands. I think Jasmine has fewer die-hard supporters, but Simon was real hard on her the other night - bringing a 17-year old to tears! - and I think that may have caused a backlash of sorts that caused more people to vote for her than otherwise would have. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 13, 2004 Author Report Posted May 13, 2004 And I think that is all guesswork! Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 I think Jasmine has fewer die-hard supporters, but Simon was real hard on her the other night - bringing a 17-year old to tears! - and I think that may have caused a backlash of sorts that caused more people to vote for her than otherwise would have. Haven't you noticed, Ray? That girl cries at the drop of a hat, she didn't need Simon's accurate assessment to open up the ducts! She's cute and all, but I pity any future boyfriend/husband, dealing with that ... Quote
RDK Posted May 14, 2004 Report Posted May 14, 2004 Dan, I think you have Jasmine mixed up with the other Hawaiian chick - heck, I can't even remember her name now. *She's* the one who broke down all the time; I don't recall seeing Jasmine cry before. I could, of course, be wrong - it's been known to happen... Quote
jazzbo Posted May 14, 2004 Author Report Posted May 14, 2004 Camille Velasco. She was so unnerved by the whole process of the show that she ruined every one of her performances. . . . Poor woman. I really think she was a great singer in waiting. . . . She may prove to be a great pop idol yet, but her time is not now! Quote
jazzbo Posted May 26, 2004 Author Report Posted May 26, 2004 Well, was anyone else as unimpressed by both singers last night as I was? Neither floored me even once, and I didn't vote for either. My wife voted for Fantasia based on her final performance, that of the Tamyra Gray song. . . . Two hours tonight! Long wait to learn the winner. Quote
RDK Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Yeah, Lon, neither girl had their best night. Much of the problem is due to song choice - a lot of mediocre material last night ("Summertime" being the exception, but it wasn't Fanntasia's best performance of it imo). I still think Fantasia is the one to beat though... Quote
AfricaBrass Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 The judges seem to have given the nod to Fantasia, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 This medley is horrible. Is it me, or is it finally evident that almost everyone in the final 12 sucks. I've never used the little green puking face before! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Is it too late to vote for La Toya London?? Seriously, after she got voted off - I gave up on American Idol for this season. Went cold turkey, and haven't watched a bit of it since then. Quote
