jazzbo Posted April 29, 2004 Author Report Posted April 29, 2004 JON IS FINALLY GONE! I'm happy about that. It was painful to watch someone else go and there he was. . . whether he enjoyed still being there or not. And having to hear him sing. . . ouch! Doing the Estafan material really taxed nearly all of them. . . I mean I think Diana DeGarmo did the best, which surprised me, and Fantasia. . . SUCKED. Since Jennifer is gone I'm not really excited about any of them as much. . . I'm going to root for George because I just FEEL him, and if Latoya won I'd not be disappointed. Quote
RainyDay Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 (edited) I was surprised at how badly they all did with the Estafan material. I'm not a fan of Estafan's singing at all (I guess that's heresy to say so) but all of the contenders were struggling with it. Although I thought Latoya's stage presence was red hot, her vocal work was weaker than usual. IMHO. I'm glad young Jon is gone. Every time they rerun the shot of his pained face when Jennifer was voted off, I genuinely feel sorry for him. Edited April 29, 2004 by RainyDay Quote
RDK Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 As long as there is a bunch of jive ass,no taste teenyboppers stuffing the ballot box nobody should expect too much from this show. While I don't disagree about the teenieboppers ballot-stuffing, I have to admit that in each of the past two seasons I believe that the best singers did indeed win. So something about the process sure works. Quote
RDK Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I'm not at all surprised that "Estafan Night" was such a bomb. It takes a certain singing style, energy, and attitude (and dare I say ethnicity?) to pull off such material with any credibility. Not to mention dance moves. I'm not sure what the producers were thinking letting the kids do salsa music. Diana came closest to getting the energy right, but she's young and vibrant and the song she performed was upbeat. I love La Toya and Fantasia, but even they were subpar this week. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 The theme is Big Band tonite. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Well, the two white chicks were atrocious. George did pretty well, and I still like the guy. Fantasia-sorry, I make it a rule not to listen to Barbra Streisand tunes, and the Queen tune didn't exactly make me forget Freddie Mercury. Which leaves us with LaToya London, who is clearly the best of this lot. I thought that they were right, whoever said it, that this is the music she was meant to sing. Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Rather than critique 19 year-olds with no training, why don't we talk about the band tonight? I know some of the American Idol watchers here are fans of big band and arranging for horns. What did you guys think of the band? Any musicians worth noting that were on the stand tonight? I've read about plenty of guys making a buck in Hollywood when the scene wasn't paying. I was hoping for at least a 4-bar from someone! boo. Quote
RDK Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Dan, while I agree that La Toya is the best/my favorite of the group, I think Fantasia's version of the Queen tune was my favorite performance of the night. Really neat arrangement. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 5, 2004 Author Report Posted May 5, 2004 (edited) I didn't dig the Queen tune (just didn't seem to fit with my idea of a tune for the big band night mostly, and really didn't have much to distinguish it vocal-wise to my ears) but I thought her version of "What are you Doing with the Rest of your Life" was perhaps my favorite performance of hers. I only count one "white chick" who I thought did an okay job. Otherwise, as much as I LOVE George, he didn't take any chances and fell flat to me, and Latoya SLAYED with her performances. And I liked Jasmine's second performance---it was perhaps her very best yet. The band. . . well I knew they wouldn't get much chance to shine on their own, but they did a decent job. I didn't recognize anyone. The drummer was cool. Edited May 5, 2004 by jazzbo Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Anybody else think it was weird that (I think) every guy in that big-band was white?? I mean, I'd of thunk there'd be one or two black guys in a band of that size, in a city the size of LA, or Burbank. Also, thought I don't mean this to be as big a slam as it's gonna probably sound like, that band all looked like 'studio musicians' to me, to the Nth degree. Quote

Also, I just do not get that George Huff guy ... he seems so stiff and soulless up there. Quote

RDK Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Maybe all the black musicians are good enough to get *real* musical gigs. Quote
.:.impossible Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Yeah, the band seemed to be all-white and over a certain age, but we all know that isn't what makes a musician great. I did notice. I assumed they were all studio musicians as well. Can't always judge a book by its cover though, right? Quote
RainyDay Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 I wasn't aware there were any "white chicks" left in the contest. One young lady is Asian/Filipina, yes? I thought the band was just okay and most of arrangements not terribly memorable. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...BAG6U6FUJS1.DTL OAKLAND 'American Idol' contestant wins big with hometown, gets 'LaToya London Day' Jim Herron Zamora, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, May 5, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Even if LaToya London is not crowned the newest American Idol, she is now, officially, "Oakland's Idol.'' The 25-year-old contender on the popular TV talent show has developed a passionate following in her hometown that now includes Mayor Jerry Brown, who officially proclaimed Tuesday "LaToya London Day." "Ms. London is known in this community as a star and has inspired Oaklanders everywhere,'' Brown said in his proclamation. The mayor delivered his proclamation Tuesday night before several hundred cheering fans during a "Vote LaToya" party at Everett & Jones Barbecue near Jack London Square. The restaurant is always popular, but on recent Tuesday nights, when "American Idol'' is broadcast, it is the epicenter of London's fan base, with adoring fans spilling into the street to cheer her on. "I'm real excited about all the hometown support,'' said her mother, Vivian Morse. "I don't even have the words to describe how happy I am or her. . .. I've always known how great she is. Now, the whole world knows about my LaToya.'' London is among the final six and is expected to make the final five this week. Before the show, an oddsmaker in Las Vegas gave her a 9-5 chance of winning the whole thing. When the competition began in March, the New York Post polled all American Idol 2004 contestants, and London's competition rated her as the best. Several fan sites have sprung up on the Internet to support her and analyze her performances. Many of London's fans said her sultry March 30 rendition of Smokey Robinson's 1965 hit "Ooo Baby Baby" was the high point of the show this season. Most of the judges praised London's rendition, but bad boy judge Simon Cowell just criticized her hair. London was born in St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco on Dec. 29, 1978, and has lived in East Oakland ever since. She was raised near 62nd Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard and attended St. Cyril's Catholic elementary school. She graduated in 1996 from Skyline High School, where she was in the same arts program made famous by actor Tom Hanks. Along the way, London starred in several choirs, including the Youth Choir at Allen Temple Baptist Church, the Oakland Youth Chorus and Skyline Gospel Choir. London, who worked several years as a clerk at Costco, is married with two stepchildren. "She sang at a lot weddings and things to make ends meet,'' Morse said. "It was always her dream to sing before big crowds, but she never got the chance until "American Idol.'' She went from dreaming about this to singing in front of the world." LAL Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Haven't watched this week's instalment but looks like there're no guys left in the competition. Excerpt from Idol site: FAREWELL TO GEORGE HUFF This week, Big Band night transported the Idols back to the years of slick hair, smooth music and flowing dresses. But you didn't think George handled the time transport as well as the other contestants, and your votes sent him home. With only four contestants and three weeks remaining, the pressure is greater than ever. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Yes, goodbye to Mr. Huff. I think he's a good singer and a nice person and I'm going to really miss him in the competition! Quote
marcoliv Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 me too... if Jasmine is the winner i´ll be pissed off... Quote
RDK Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Well, easy money's on Jasmine getting the boot tomorrow... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 Well, easy money's on Jasmine getting the boot tomorrow... Yeah, I thought the same thing -- if talent has anything to do with this. Quote
LAL Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 IMO, George Huff should be in the top three, two even. He may not have performed well on the night but on the following half hour results show, he delivered much much better and without resorting to all that reaching for high notes/screaming that some of the ladies were doing. This guy also has the stuff to be a good jazz singer, if only he were exposed to more of the music. Anyhow, he'd have had a BIG problem delivering the Donna Summer songs in this latest round, if he were still in. Or, did they choose the theme cause all the guys had been eliminated? Quote
jazzbo Posted May 12, 2004 Author Report Posted May 12, 2004 Well, Fantastic Burrito did the best performance if you ask me in her first song, followed by Diana DeGarmo in her second performance. . . . Overall, I'm glad we're getting near the end. After Jennifer and George departing, I'm much less interested. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 12, 2004 Report Posted May 12, 2004 For me, its LaToya and then everyone else. But I must say I must be hooked, to actually watch the Disco show. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 13, 2004 Report Posted May 13, 2004 OK.... I feel like boycotting the rest of the show. Un-believable. How about now?? Seriously, I can't imagine any of the final three wining now. I mean, I know one of them will win -- but none of them deserve to win. /really doesn't care who wins now... Quote
