AfricaBrass Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 Let's call it the "Hung" factor. Wow! I know it's just a TV show, but that sucks. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 What shocking results tonight! My favorite is out. Jennifer I think is the best singer, less bag o' tricks than Fantasia, more innovative than Latoya and George. (All in my humble opinion!) I'm really going to miss her, and a lot of the enjoyment will drop from watching this show now for me. . . . I cannot believe that John Stevens, Diana DeGarmo and Jasmine Trias scored higher this week than Jennifer, Fantasia and Latoya! And that Stevens is still in the game! Amazing! Quote

Since the cat is out of the bag... I'm really disgusted that Jennifer is out. I thought she was great last night. I think she really had a chance. John Stevens has to feel like a giant dope by now. He is completely outclassed. It must be embarrassing to go up against his competitors. Quote
rachel Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 OK.... I feel like boycotting the rest of the show. Un-believable. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I was almost skeptical when it dawned on me that people were voting for the worst singers. Now it is blatantly obvious. William Hung's appeal has begun a chain reaction. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 "Un-believable." That's the best way to put it! Quote
RDK Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 Wow... I'm really shocked. The two groups were exactly reversed in who I thought were going to be the top three. I actually feel sorry for John. The poor kid has looked ready to go the last few weeks; not so much that he expected to go, but almost like he *wanted* to go. He knows he's outclassed, but what can he do if people keep voting for him? Geez, I'm so sorry to see Jennifer gone... I guess pop stars are like politicians... we get what we deserve. Quote
jack Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I don't watch Idol, but I have heard all day today about the bad voting that happened last night between the best group and the not so best group? Now I am hearing that many people may stop watching the show. Quote
RainyDay Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 This has been all over the news today. Some folks think it's racism. That's certainly possible but I wonder if this is some kind of college prank to vote for the worst singer, which would clearly be the Red Headed Kid (who, by the way, looked horrified when Jennifer got the boot). It would actually be a more cruel thing to do to him than to the talented young ladies. I think this is why we used to have the draft. To give bored young men with too much time on their hands something to do. My prediction: Someone is going to discover that some computer auto dialer was used to stack the voting in favor of somebody or other. BWTHDIK? Quote
RDK Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 No, no conspiracy here. It's just that the three "divas" who ended up in the bottom three last night were all essentially the same "type" of singer (if you want, soulful black women). Their votes ended up getting split, so much so that the others - who have more distinctive and likely more juvenile fan bases - ended up with the decks stacked in their favor. Another factor is that so many people "expected" that the diva trio (the best singers by most opinions) were "safe" this week so everybody voted for their second or third choices. Unfortunately, *too many* people probably took that position, which left the favorites out in the cold. Quote
RainyDay Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 The three divas are so different. I'm not fond of Jennifer because she is still very gospelly. She can sing but it feels very churchy to me, and not pop. Plus, Jennifer has a tendency to shout. She doesn't know how to layer her performance with softness. Latoya has a lovely voice but not a lot of warmth. Fantasia is the stuff. They sound very different to me. I'm disappointed that there isn't a stronger male contender this year. No, no conspiracy here You are probably right but a conspiracy makes it more interesting. B) Quote
jazzbo Posted April 23, 2004 Author Report Posted April 23, 2004 That's weird. . .they way I hear it Jennifer was doing something more innovative with her gospel roots, Latoya is a smooth pop singer with real experience and chops and confidence, and it is Fantasia that seems too "gospelly" to me, and repeating herself. Either way, I think that this mega and speed dialing was a factor, Jennifer should still be there by my estimation. . . . I just think that if John Stephens doesn't go next week I am just going to be very very bummed. Quote

I just think that if John Stephens doesn't go next week I am just going to be very very bummed. Well, there you are. It really does get down to personal taste. I dig Fantasia like crazy. I just responded to an article about vocalists sent by a friend who is a musician and said the same thing to him. While you can get technical about why one singer is better than another, it ultimately gets down to personal taste. Billie Holiday didn't have the best vocal chops but she could make your heart bleed and that's what counted. I'm sure there are people out there (all three of them?) who don't care for her but she touches a lot of people with her style. By the way, I listened to talk radio this morning, and the theme was whether or not what happened on Idol was an example of racism. Interestingly, a lot of folks thought it was. One lady who called said she thought it was because the black women had too much attitude. I should point out that this a fairly mainstream talk radio show with pretensions of being left leaning. I don't think it is racism. I'm still going for the drunk college frat boy angle. Quote
LAL Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 Well well well. William Hung's CD is a top 1000 best seller at Tower Online. Ain't that great! Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 My mother-in-law thinks it was a "bad idea" for Fantasia to bring her daughter out, being a nineteen year old out of wedlock. These girls are in a pop contest, they aren't running for office. And why would people be voting for their second and third favorite? Don't you find that strange? Quote
RDK Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 I find a lot about the show strange... but I still dig it! Quote
RDK Posted April 23, 2004 Report Posted April 23, 2004 For some other views on Idol, check out the official site, idolonfox.com. The chat board is filled with teens and old ladies who think John is "cute." It's a waste of time, but a hoot if you want to read another viewpoint. And if you haven't already, check out the recaps - they're hilarious. Yet another group of humanity is represented here http://pub207.ezboard.com/bsurvivorsucks, though I have to warn you that they're a rude, cynical, and ugly bunch. RainyDay Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 http://www.oaklandtribune.com/Stories/0,14...2111071,00.html Article Last Updated: Tuesday, April 27, 2004 - 3:26:56 AM PST Fans rally for Oakland's 'Idol' La Toya Special phone event tonight By Angela Hill, STAFF WRITER OAKLAND -- So it's come to this, has it -- a city's hometown spirit sparked only by the promise of saucy barbecue ribs? "Whatever it takes," said Dorothy King-Jernegan of Everett & Jones Barbeque. "We've got to support our girl La Toya, and we've got to support Oakland. And if it takes all the barbecue in the world, so be it." Yes, with the surprise vote on last week's "American Idol" TV show in which Oakland's La Toya London tumbled to the bottom of the remaining six singers, her success on tonight's episode now hangs by a phone line. So the folks at Everett & Jones -- where London has performed many times in the past -- want the people of Oakland to get together, set the London voting line on speed dial, do some digital pushups to warm up if you have to and, gosh darn it, dial in for the local gal before it's too late. You can do that at home, of course. But if you go to the "Get Out the Vote" party starting at 5 tonight at Everett & Jones' club and restaurant on Broadway and Second Street at Jack London Square, you'll get some grub to boot. (Just don't spill any sauce on your cell phone.) In addition to food and refreshments, "Idol" fans will hear live entertainment from local performers such as Gypsea Rose and FEMI. Then they'll be able to watch the "Idol" show -- which airs at 8 p.m. on Fox-TV (Channel 2) -- on 12 television sets in three different rooms in the restaurant, which might be hard to do all at once, but you're welcome to try. "Bring your cell phones and be prepared to dial," King-Jernegan said. "I want to wake up Oakland. My position is, not only is (London) a great singer, but she's a positive image for the city. Normally on the show, when they get down to five contestants ... the singers then get to come home and showcase where they're from. "It would be so great for La Toya to come here, show off the youth choir she was with at Skyline High School," King-Jernegan said. "For some reason, Oakland hasn't been rallying behind her and voting the way cities have done for other contestants. But we can't miss out on a chance like that." The next person to be voted off "Idol" will be revealed in Wednesday's show. For more information on the party, call 326-4559. Quote
BruceH Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Did anyone see one of the better singers who got voted off was on Letterman a few nights ago, doing the Top Ten List? Quote
chris olivarez Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 As long as there is a bunch of jive ass,no taste teenyboppers stuffing the ballot box nobody should expect too much from this show. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 Saw on-line that John got the axe. He was in way over his head, and as nice as he was -- he really needed to go. I haven't been very impressed with this year's bunch. Not nearly as interesting or tallented as either of the two previous seasons. Glad George didn't get canned. He won't win the whole thing, but he's got a lot of heart, and some of that comes through in his performances too. I won't say I'm rooting for him to win, but I am rooting for him to stick around another week or two. He could come in third place (overall), and that'd be OK with me. Still, pretty hard for me to be very excited about any of them. I was sorry to see Amy Adams get voted out so early. Here's a pic of her, cuz you're not likely to remember her name. Wasn't an incredible tallent, but I'd take her over half the bunch that's left, any day. Looks like La Toya London will run away with it, if tallent has anything to do with it (which is certainly not always the case). Quote
