It's my turn (again) .... out of nothing ....

That happened to me a couple of months ago. Ironically, poor health had kept me largely indoors for 4 weeks and then I caught COVID...out of nowhere seemingly.

Just had my booster which made me really unwell for 24 hours but well worth it.

I wish you well and hope it's not too bad a dose. Plenty of warming and heartening Soul music prescribed I suggest!

After 5 years of escaping, I still got COVID. 2 weeks ago I had all the symptoms: sore throat, headache, fever, no taste and no smell. It lasted a few days and although annoying it was all bearable. Last weekend I thought I had recovered: no more fever, sore throat was gone, taste was already coming back. Just still a bit tired actually. Then last Sunday I was treated to a serious ear infection in my left ear and the day after that in my other ear. I used to have it a lot when I was little and had forgotten how much it hurts. Really bad. After three days the pain was gone and the fever too. But now my ears are still completely blocked. You feel enormous pressure on them but I can't open them. On top of that I hear a very high-pitched beep in both my ears. Gosh, this is so frustrating. It makes the whole day tiring. Teaching like this is really awful.... my three big hobbies, CrossFit l, reading and listening to music, can't do...it makes me tired and quite irritable and I feel sorry for my wife and children who have to sit in the house with such a grumpy person all day. according to the doctor it should go away by itself. I hope this happens soon then.

Pim, so sorry you are going through this. I had inner ear infection in both ears as a teen, and I'm experiencing many symptoms of Covid this week (though testing negatively three days in a row) and they are lessening now thank goodness. My wife was sick last week and I finally caught it, just a bad cold I guess.

Hope you are alreadyfeeling better.

PIM - I know someone who had a serious ear infection and they had to drain his ears for him to recover his hearing. Did they drain your ears too?

My youngest daughter got Covid again earlier this week. She was pretty sick for about 4 days. Today is the first day she's trying to go without meds.

Covid still sucks.

If I didn't know you lived in the Netherlands, this would have given it away: "according to the doctor it should go away by itself."

This really sounds awful, hope you get better soon!

Haha are you refering to Dutch doctors Niko? Cause I think I know what you mean. I’ve had some injuries from CrossFit in the past and the advice was always : just don’t go working out for a month and see what that does where I just needed some simple exercises to actually recover. I know thanks to that experience that full rest with a sports injury is the worst you could do…

Indeed... I recently talked to someone who was studying to switch from being a German doctor to being a Dutch doctor.... The main difference is that for a large number of diseases the official guideline is "please come back in a week, if the issue persists... If the pain gets to much you may switch from paracetamol to ibuprofen." rather than doing something just to give the patient the feeling that something has been done.... I do like the Dutch system actually, but still I always have to smile when the doctor starts talking about Paracetamol and waiting for a week...

It seems to me that you'd want to strike a balance between the conservative Dutch approach of "watchful waiting" and the more interventionist style seen in the U.S. (tho, I've witnessed firsthand in the U.S. that more watchful approach,
but it comes off, instead, as lazy instead of a well thought-out way of doing things).
Countries like Germany and Sweden, in particular, seem to offer a well-balanced approach that avoids the pitfalls of both extremes.

On a plane ride at the end of January, my wife and I sat next to a couple who coughed through the entire flight.  They had masks on, but I still knew this wouldn't be good.  We both started feeling bad within a few days, and were concerned it might be COVID.  My wife went to the doctor and got tested.  It wasn't COVID, it was parainfluenza, which is a different virus than the flu.  She was told there was nothing to be done, she had to get better on her own.  Indeed, she felt better in a few days.  On the other hand, it lingered with me for about a month, and cleared up around the time I started experiencing seasonal allergies.  As Rosanne Rosannadanna used to say, if it's not one thing, it's another.  Feel better!

the restraint in prescribing medication is something i certainly appreciate. I also endorse the principle that your body has to solve it itself. I also have to say that my GP is always fantastic when something is wrong with our children. Then she is not at all wait-and-see and we can always go the same day. In some cases, however, waiting is not always the best thing to do. As i said: with my sports injuries it didn't help me much and nowadays I make an appointment with a physiotherapist or manual therapist straight away.

Well, a confirmation of Niko’ story… went to the doctors office and there’s nothing they could do. It has to go away by itself and that could take weeks 😫 I asked if it’s possible to perforate the eardrum and drain the ear out but they said that could result in a scar on the eardrum…. This sucks. Music listening is no fun for the coming time unfortunately
