Ken Dryden
It looks like the Braves need to sweep the Mets then take two of three against the Royals to at least tie the Mets for the final wild card spot, which they would earn because of head to head competition. The odds are against them due to their inconsistent pitching, but who knows?

The odds are against them due to their inconsistent pitching, but who knows? You also have the Diamondbacks in front of you, you could catch them instead for the final spot. Mets at Milwaukee won't be easy for them, and KC is in a major swoon that they are running out of time to reverse. The Braves aren't in the spot they'd want to be but I don't think their odds are that bad.

ghost of miles
Detroit’s finishing up with a homestand against the middling Rays and the gawdawful White Sox… I like their chances for staying in the postseason WC lane. 15 hours ago, JSngry said: Yeah, fuck that guy. Co-sign. And still miss the early/mid 1970s A’s, which was right around the time that I began to follow baseball. I need to look for a good book about that team and era. 1973 A’s-Mets was the first World Series I remember watching, and it was a good ‘un. See ya' Amy! OMG!!! Padres clinch WC slot on a triple play! They better get that closer back on track though... TRIPLE PLAY!!!

ghost of miles
Congrats to the Detroit Tigers, who clinched an AL wild-card spot tonight after being 55-63 on August 11 (they’ve been 31-11 since). And condolences to the team they defeated, the Chicago White Sox, who have now displaced the 1962 NY Mets as holders of the worst-ever MLB season record. JSngry
Kudos to the ChiSox for sweeping the Angels, though. And sympathies to Wash, unless they were tanking for a draft pick, in which case, sucks to be him.

I sincerely hope that Hinch is viewing this, being able to build a core of kids as a group (literally, most of the rookies have come up together through the minors) as a personal cleansing of that shitshow he had in Houston. We'll see what happens going forth, both in the post-season and in the years hence/Hinch, but unless/until it gets dark, all I can say is that I stumbled into this team because mine died early, came back for Jason Benetti, and started noticing a bunch of kids I had never even heard of playing crisp baseball that only got crisper the deeper into the season they went. I'll take crisp, always! Plus, Detroit. Now that I got family there and have seen the city a bit...yeah, Tigers!
JSngry
Oh yeah, the Tigers owner is a pig and is responsible for a lot of the destruction of historic Detroit, especially Black Detroit. Most sports owners appear to be pigs. Not that that's any excuse. But the less I see of him, the more I can think of the team itself. ghost of miles
Friends of mine in a baseball text chain commenting on how the AL Central has placed three teams in the playoffs: >>And the Twins aren’t one of them. Tigers look really good. They swept the Rays this week in 3 very well played games by both teams. Rays manager Kevin Cash called them “dangerous in the playoffs, they do a lot of things well and they play an unpredictable style.”<<
JSngry
Tigers also have a possible advantage of having a very young team whose legs and arms are still fresh. Watching other games, I noticed the tiredness of the grind on a lot of players. Will that be an actual factor. Maybe, maybe not. We shall see. ghost of miles
Quite the eventful doubleheader going down in Atlanta today between the Mets and the Braves: Who moves on to October? Arizona needs a sweep from either team to get in. If it's a sweep, it's the winner of said sweep and Arizona, and the loser goes home for the offseason. If it's a split, Arizona is out and both the Mets and Braves are in. Good drama for the last day of regular-season play! Dan Gould
One final rooting interest before I concentrate on the elimination of the Yankees: Prevention of a Mets post-season. The odds seem long on a sweep frankly and it is surely a disadvantage for both teams (if there is a split) to have to play two games and then go on the road for a 2 out of 3 elimination series.
