Dan Gould
I can't help but notice that since the one big trade the Yanks made, Loaiza has been piss-poor, and on Friday, Contreras not only beat my Red Sox but did it in Fenway. Wouldn't want to be in Cashman's shoes the day after that happened!

Wouldn't want to be in Cashman's shoes the day after that happened! Can't dispute you but I'm hopeful that Loaiza can get it together before I lump him with Contreras, someone who proved to me in spades that he can't handle the pressure of pitching for the New York Yankees. The majors over the years has been littered with pitchers who do well for other teams, e.g., Kenny Rogers a current all-star no less (!), who choke once they put on the pinstripes understanding that unless the team gets into (and wins) the World Series, the season is a failure. Unfair expectations perhaps, but that's what the tradition demands.
Dave James
I'm convinced it's the facial hair. Not only does Loaiza look goofy without his goatee, but I think when he had to shave he said goodbye to his cutter. Dan, I certainly noticed Contreras' win at Fenway. Up until that night, he'd been a complete basket case in that yard. I really do believe that there are some people who can be successful as Yankees and some who can't. The jury is still out on Loaiza, but I'd be surprised if he winds up anyplace other than on the bench when the playoffs roll around. I agree about Cashman. Between the Loaiza trade and his wife saying he's wants to throw in with the Evil Empire, he's gotta be taking some heat from The Boss. Up over and out. Unfair expectations perhaps, but that's what the tradition demands. Loaiza is only signed until the end of this eason, and Contreras is owed $8mil a year for the next two years. Cashman created some salary room AND got rid of a manager's nightmare in Contreras. Also, with the revival of 'El Duque'(proven post-season pitcher), Loaiza becomes a luxury, a sixth starter. I'd call dumping Contreras addition by subtraction. Now if everybody can get healthy on the pitching staff, and the Yanks can find a lefty reliever... Dan Gould
Speaking of lefty relievers, the Sox made a dandy situational lefty pickup, Mike Myers I believe is his name. Six lefties up, six lefties down, and righties are 1 for 5 against him. Got a big out last night with a run lead and a runner at first in the 8th, before Manny had his adventure with the fly ball in left. Which brings me to the real reason for my post: The Sox are RED HOT (12 of their last fifteen, six in a row) and the Yanks are ICE COLD. And the lead, which was 10 1/2 games barely a week ago, is down to 5 1/2. The only thing that will help the Yanks now is the fact that they get Cleveland, which went ice cold recently too. But 5 1/2 with 40 to play, and six head-to-head games? I'll take my chances.
sheldonm
Well, does anyone think anyteam can beat the Cards in the National league? Hell, in the majors even? They made the Braves, just about the hottest team in baseball look like they did in the first part of the season....a sub .500 team. The Cards have 3 legit MVP candidates,(Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen, and Jim Edmonds) there pitching may not be perfect, but then again, whose has? My money and heart are with the Cardinals as they have been since I was 7 years old (quite a few years ago). I'm heading there in a few weeks to see three games against the Astros....can't wait. Although people mention their starting pitching, who else have a stafff with all their starters with the exception on one (soon to be all five starters) with 10 wins or more, they have balance!!! I ususally go to about a dozen of their games a year and try to see a few new stadiums each year also.....I love baseball !

IF the Yankees make the World Series this year, that's the one team I wouldn't want them to face- the Cards are too solid and their pitching is very good. They are also very strong defensively, which counts for a lot when you're in the playoffs/World Series and the games tend to be lower scoring. BERIGAN
It's a fluke, I tellya! A fluke! Trust me when I say the M's will prove to be the big spoiler and the A's are gonna stay hot while the Rangers falter. It's all John Hart's fault. And Tom Hicks, who shoulda stuck to running his hockey team into the ground. If there is any justice in the baseball world, your M's will snatch up Fuson and Jaramillo this coming off-season when the two-headed-behemoth of Hicks-Hart unceremoniously dumps 'em. And come right back to kick the shit outta the Rangers. It would be very deserving! Hey B.A. (Big Al, get it? ) You should bad mouth the Rangers more often, they are what, 8 and 2 since you wrote them off???(EDIT, I didn't realize how long ago you said that, they are 8-2 in last 10 at least) Welcome to my world! "The Braves are a last place team, I tells ya!" berigan, several times.... Edited August 25, 2004 by BERIGAN

Dave James
Dan - Talk to me after your boys have played Anaheim, Texas and Oakland in consecutive series. That may tell the tale. Don't get me wrong. Ever since the dust up between A-Rod and Varitek, the Sox have been unstoppable. And I'm not kidding myself about the Yankee starting pitching. Mussina got shelled again yesterday and Brown has been shaky since he came off the DL. Frankly, I'd be surprised to see my boys in the Series this year, but I'd be surprised to see the Red Sox there either. Up over and out. Dan Gould
Well Dave, you can't say that the Sox aren't entering this stretch of the schedule at the right time. Now, the Angels are red hot too, but the Sox get the first six of those games at home, where they are more than 20 games above .500. Let's see, the Sox are second in the league in team ERA, tops in wins by the starting pitchers, and tops in runs, slugging and OBP. Their only hole was defense, and that's been plugged up with the Nomar trade, and that's not even considering that Pokey Reese and Trot Nixon are about ready to start rehab assignments this week. The Sox look so much more like a World Series team than the Yankees its not even funny. In fact, considering the way their competition is playing, I'd say its more likely the Yanks miss the play-offs than make the World Series. And that would be too delicious, because if 180 million dollars doesn't get you to the playoffs, Steinbrenner's head may very well explode. But you're right, we'll talk after this stretch. In fact, maybe I'll provide daily updates. But I'll tell you this, the Yanks better hope they get some separation back during this stretch, because they've shown they're unlikely to beat the Sox head-to-head, so if the lead is in the viscinity of three games when they go at it again, its anyone's division crown. Dan Gould
Oh, and by the way, in sweeping four games from Detroit, we allowed a grand total of 6 runs. And Detroit has scored as many runs this season as the Halos.

Dan Gould
Are y'all certain you're not worried yet? Sox 10, Angels 7. Indians 22, Yankees 0 And that was at the Bronx, no less, the worst loss in franchise history, and with Vasquez the starter, to boot! :g So, the lead in the East is down to 3 1/2, while the Sox lead in the Wild Card is 2 1/2. Just think: One more night like tonite, the Sox will be closer to first place than the Angels will be to the Wild Card. Aggie87
...Astros are finally making a push towards the NL wildcard. It's a shame they have to do that in the first place, with all the talent on the team. I hope they'll find a way to re-sign Carlos Beltran in the offseason, he's been the best player on the team since he got there, offensively at least. And it would be nice if Clemens decided to stay for one more year as well...
BERIGAN
How about those Astros? They were soooo out of it, well after winning 8 of 10, they are only 18.5 games out in the central! Oh wait, they are only 3 out in the wildcard race....so many teams have really turned it on of late, should be a great september!
