Well obviously I was wrong. Now I'll hear Yankee fans tell me how by all rights it should have been a sweep.

Well, I concede nothing, least of all the division. Obviously we'll need a little help, but with three to play at Fenway and three other series, including the Yanks having to face Minnesota as they line up their starters for the playoffs, anything can still happen.

Enjoy it for now, Harold.

After seeing the Yanks get slapped around all season by the Sox, I was just happy to see them look like the better team for once. The real showdown is going to be in the playoffs (and I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that!).

Dan,

When all the dust cleared, I wound up having a pretty good weekend. As you might imagine, I was ready to throw myself on my sword late Friday night, but Saturday and Sunday couldn't have been better. After Sunday's game, I was sorely tempted to drop the shoe, but then I realized, as Yogi used to say, "it ain't over 'til it's over" and that's certainly the case in the AL East. If the Yanks do well this coming weekend, then I think you can book a Minnesota Boston playoff. If they don't...who knows.

Up over and Harold.

Right now, Harold, my darker impulses are taking over and I fear a collapse. We have to get our act together against Baltimore cause we've got seven more with them and have not handled them this year at all.

In fact, I dare say that's the difference in the division race: The Birds roll over for the Yanks but play us tougher than anyone, and there's your four and a half games.

We were due for a let up, but there's no time for it to linger. Glad that Schilling goes tonite.

Will the Giants, Cubs, or Astros make the playoffs?

Does it matter?

Since Atlanta and St Louis are the teams to beat.

Looks like the Yanks are in the World Series again.

Well, every year the Braves are world beaters before the playoffs, then you realize that the starters don't throw all that hard....John Smoltz still has the best arm on the team...

Are the Cards finally going to rest some of the regulars? Tony needs to remember that Albert Pujols is playing with the same painful foot problem that hobbled McGuire for much of his career, and that Edmonds is 34 and shouldn't play just about every damn game....Cards and Yankees, with the Cards winning in 7....hope, hope, hope....Yankees cannot win again!!!!

Berigan,

You're giving me flashbacks to 1964- I was an eight year old who thought Mickey Mantle was the coolest thing on Earth(hadn't heard Miles yet), and I was so excited that they were in the World Series. I got to watch some of the games(most were played in daylight hours, not like now, when you have to stay up 'til 12:30A.M. on the East Coast to see the end of the game), and I suffered much heartbreak as the Cardinals beat the Yanks in 7. Little did I know then that the Yanks would not make the postseason until 1976. The Cards do have a great team, and I think you're right about resting Pujols & Edmonds.

Tony has been resting the regulars for the better part of 2 weeks. I went to three games last week and Reteria sat out a couple games (sitting out tonight), Walker 1 or 2, Edmonds 1 and Womack a game or two. Although Rolen is a little banged up, I think Tony is keeping him out for another week to rest up. I think they will be ready for the playoffs.

PhillyQ, check out the David Halberstam book October 1964. Got it for a buddy of mine not long ago, and it looked so good that I've decided to hunt down a copy for myself.

Red Sox' Orlando Cabrera talking about being mobbed at home plate after his walkoff homer to beat the O's last night:

"Oh, my God," said Cabrera. "They started hitting me. I don't know who it was, I think it was Manny [Ramirez], tried to take my pants off. I think it was Manny or [Kevin] Millar -- one of those two guys. It was a great win."

:D

Figures it was Manny or Millar.

3.5 back of the Yanks with three at Fenway starting tomorrow. We play so much better at home, I don't think its too much to hope for a sweep, if Pedro gets us going on Friday. Wakefield has historically baffled the free swingers in the Yankee lineup, and its Schilling on Sunday.

anyone gonna watch "hu$tle" on espn this saturday?

i don't think pete will ever get into the hof, dead or alive

ss1

The guy they have playing Pete, who is it? God, he looks like he is plagued with arthritis. Sure seems like an athlete to me! <_< Doesn't look, or sound like him either . brought to you by the people that thought John Goodman could do a credible job of playing the greatest baseball player ever.....

Tom Sizemore.

He doesn't play Rose during his playing career, and it looks to me like he at least has the girth to nail it.

Now, if he displays arrogance, minimal parenting skills, a love for the all mighty dollar, and contempt for the law and the game he supposedly loves, he'll deserve an Emmy nomination.

The Rangers just swept the A’s. Went into the bottom of the ninth behind 4-2 and scored three runs to win it.

SWEET!!!!!!!

Of course, this would’ve been a helluva lot more significant if it’d been on the road, but I’ll take ‘em however I can get ‘em!

The Red Sox MUST let Pedro walk after this year. Anyone who is so unnerved by his string of futility that he's gone from "raise the Bambino from the dead, I'll drill him in the ass" to "the Yankees are my daddy" has no f-ing business being in a Red Sox uniform.

And Terry Francona is a fucking moron and people in Boston should beat the October rush and string his ass up right now. The man got his freaking job because the other guy didn't know when to lift Martinez. So now the single most important game of the year arrives, and he isn't smart enough to lift him.

Martinez was lucky to pitch seven innings-his fastball reached 91 exactly once, he had little command and absolutely no fucking business being out there in the eighth. There were multiple fly outs to the deepest part of the park. I mean, his stuff was so weak, it made more sense to send Pedro out in game seven than it did last night. And yet that fucking asshole doesn't have a fucking clue.

And now Pedro thinks of himself as the Yankee's bitch. That's just fucking great.

The Sox have to let the prima donna bitch walk, and put the money into Carl Pavano, so they'll have a new number two to go with Schilling and a future number one when Schilling leaves.

Let Pedro's "daddy" throw money at him.

Re: Pedro/the 8th last night, as a very wise man once said, "It's deja vu all over again." ^_^

Dan, your one consolation about Martinez may well be that Steinbrenner signs him! He's always willing to throw a few million at a once-great, now-aging pitcher... <_<

That game was beyond deja-vu(As Yogi might say)

I was so caught off guard with him still out there (Saw highlights during braves game) I thought that surely they brought Pedro in for the 8th inning, not that he was still out there! Damn, the bullpen that tired? He is not Roger Clemens, or Shilling, a pitcher that gets better, throws harder as the game goes on....do you think the Sox get that now???

Oh, and the Braves with a 46 year old first baseman(Who has driven in more runs than anyone his age EVER has) a rookie in left fielder, a catcher with no track record at the major league level, Chipper back at 3rd baseicon8.gif and a starting does not have Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Millwood, Jason Schmidt anymore still ran away and hid from the rest of the East....Bobby Cox is a genius, at least duing the regular season...13 straight, with AOL/TimeWarner forever cutting the budget....
