Dan Gould Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 When I saw the subject line of the post I thought, another vault recording be released? Then seeing the review all I can really say is ... OUCH. Quote
Mark Stryker Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 Coda: The pianist in the band, Emmanuel (Manuel) Riggins is a Detroiter and drummer Karriem Riggins' father. Green, as most of you probably know, was living in Detroit in the '70s. Quote

Yet the writer has Green as a "respected figure in NY ever since ..." which I take it to mean he was unaware that he had moved to Detroit some years before this gig. (Although, I guess, " ... ever since" could refer to the ongoing respect for Green in NYC after he established himself there.) Quote
Dub Modal Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 The writer’s annoyance at the whistle is hilarious Quote
adh1907 Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 I love it, especially the whistle! You don’t get reviews like that anymore (well, not in the UK press), everything’s great where jazz is concerned. Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted February 13 Author Report Posted February 13 That whistle can be heard on the 1975 Oil Can Harry's release. Listen around the 22 minute mark of "How Insensitive." Quote
Ken Dryden Posted February 14 Report Posted February 14 I doubt that I would have made it through the entire set. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 14 Report Posted February 14 Beware those "funky disco rock rhythms", death of real Jazz... Quote

BFrank Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 (edited) Phil Elwood was the regular jazz critic with the SF Chronicle and Examiner for many years. I would often see him at jazz (and some rock) shows. Edited February 19 by BFrank Quote
bertrand Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 A good chance this was recorded, as were most Keystone gigs. Quote

In fact, it would be a perfect use case for modern de-mixing technology. Digitally remove the whistle on two-track pre-FM mix-downs of live Grant Green recordings. It would be kind of a public service -- like removing Yoko Ono screaming over John Lennon and Chuck Berry on the Dick Cavett Show. 😁 Quote

Just as taking the electric saw off that one track on Lee Morgan's last album was bogus, regardless of how you feel about musical saws. However, it would be legit to take the screaming idiot in the audience off of Elvis C at the Elmo. Quote

It is a situation similar to Left Bank, no list as far as I know and perhaps no succession plan for tape ownership. Quote

I've seen a couple of lists of recordings from the Keystone Korner. There was no Grant Green on those lists. I can ask when I play there in a couple of weeks. Quote
