Because whatever it was, those cuts sounded boxier than the OG 1957 LP. That's neither good nor bad, because it's a boxy room. But now I'm curious, because there we no credits on that set other than originally recorded by RVG and produced for release by MC. And Rudy was certainly around then. I also wonder what Rudy used to make the 7.5 ips reels, especially tape width. And if these old OG tapes have already been used, just how "virgin" are they? Questions aside, my curiosity has gotten the best of me and I'm in on this one. I am dubious. Quote

They still do new releases and first-release archival items (i.e. Blakey, Elvin Jones) on CD but catalog reissues are vinyl only. Quote
Pim Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 For some reason the Village Vanguard stuff never really spoke to me. Hard to tell why as I love Newk, like this period and most other people are so damn enthustiac about it. So I decided to stream them once again but still no 'click' here. Won't give up on them yet though. 🤔 Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 I have the 1987 cds of this. Never got the RVG version. So I might upgrade if the sound turns out dramatically better. Quote
Big Al Posted February 15 Report Posted February 15 The strangest thing happened the other day (interestingly it happened the same day the Org board was down): this was available for streaming on YouTube Music but it only lasted for a day because it's gone now. I'm not sure how or why it happened. I'm just glad I was able to listen to it for the brief time it was available. I don't know what magic Joe Harley & Co worked on these tapes but these performances sounded phenomenal! Almost like you were there at the Vanguard! I can only imagine how good this is going to sound on the actual LP or CD (I'm planning on getting the LP). I was on the fence about this release prior to hearing this what must now be called a "sneak preview." Having heard it now is like hearing it for the first time with clean ears. Prior to this, this album had never made an impression on me; the other day, I couldn't stop listening. It all clicked tremendously! So yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to this release now! Quote
Rabshakeh Posted February 15 Report Posted February 15 I'm anti-box set and audiophile reissues, and I generally prefer the "original" historic LP release to any expanded version. But this is one three record set in which I might actually invest. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 15 Report Posted February 15 I buy jazz vinyl once or twice a year, on average. This might well be my first 2024 LP purchase. Quote
Niko Posted February 21 Report Posted February 21 Bailey shows up quite a bit in those Leftbank concert listings... That thread being up and the mention of Walt Namuth made me find another recording credit for the bass playing Donald Bailey ... https://www.discogs.com/de/release/8045466-Leslie-J-Schnierer-SJ-Ted-Hawk-Trio-The-Dawn Quote

clifford_thornton Posted April 26 Report Posted April 26 Ordered the LP set through my local shop, and looking forward to it. Quote
Clunky Posted April 27 Report Posted April 27 The sound is so good on the LP edition ( presumably CD too) because they used the tapes from the Vanguard rather than dubs created by Ruby immediately after the recording. Apparently the original 7.5ips tapes haven’t been used since then. The difference is startling to my ears Quote

hbbfam Posted April 27 Report Posted April 27 I have the 2013 HD download. That version is fine, and more than acceptable. This new download is a little better. Fuller with more depth. Was it worth the upgrade. Perhaps. But now that I have the new release, I won't be listening to the older one. Quote
hbbfam Posted April 29 Report Posted April 29 Usually I find suitable scans on discogs for my HD downloads (very occasionally they come with liner notes). I cannot find a scan of the back cover of the CD version of Sonny Vanguard. If anyone wants to post one or send me a PM with the scan, I would appreciate it. Quote
JSngry Posted April 30 Report Posted April 30 The CD is quite vivid indeed. But I'm keeping the RVG as well, because it's sequenced in recording order (or so they say). That's an interesting flow on this gig. Besides, the Uncle Don thing didn't make it to the new version (why?) and I like hearing that (why?). So I will now have two editions on my shelf. It happens sometimes. Quote

In the extensive documentation it would have been nice to summarise the order of recording and what titles were on the previous issues. Not a biggie but it would have been nice. Quote
JSngry Posted May 1 Report Posted May 1 The new tapes in recording order and full announcements would have a definitive package. And would have made the RVG obsolete. Quote

Joe Harley does post here occasionally so he might be able to confirm, but someone on the Hoffman forums said that they wanted to keep the original LP's 6 tracks in their original sequence. Quote

I agree with that sentiment, nice to have the original album reproduced, then bonus tracks, if I must chose, but nice to have it both ways. In cases like the BN Hank Mobley's (No Room For Squares, The Turnaround, Straight No Chaser) and Jimmy Smith'd (The Sermon and House Party), where the original albums mixed sessions, the original CD's issued by session, and the RVG CD's reproduced the original albums with bonus tracks, I kept both the original CD's and the RVG CD's.
