EKE BBB Posted February 6, 2024 Report Posted February 6, 2024 The Hot Club of New York announced the passing of Jan Evensmo. I got this information last night from fellow board member @Fer Urbina: "This morning we learned the sad news that Jan Evensmo has left us. For those who aren't familiar with this name, he was an amazing jazz fan, scholar and discographer who created the jazz 'solography.' His work is available for free at https://www.jazzarcheology.com/. Jan was a great influence on Charles, myself, and many others in the Hot Club community, and he would often visit Hot Club meetings on his visits to the states. His work has been an invaluable resource in our programming." Jan was a true jazz lover and enthusiast, a generous human being and a nice guy. May he rest in peace! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted February 7, 2024 Report Posted February 7, 2024 Long ago I purchased Jazz Solography Series Vol.5 - The Tenor Saxophone and Clarinet of Lester Young 1936-1942 by Jan Evensmo. R.I.P. Quote
Johan Hauken Hauknes Posted February 8, 2024 Report Posted February 8, 2024 We got the sad news on Monday. You my read/Google translate my eulogy (original in Norwegian), here https://salt-peanuts.eu/jan-evensmo-r-i-p/ with a brief description of his valuable work. This is a loss to the Norwegian jazz community, as well as to the International jazz discography & archeology community. Rest in peace, dear Jan. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 10, 2024 Report Posted February 10, 2024 (edited) Ooh ... Some time ago I bought a used copy of Jazz Solography Series Vol. 4 (Charlie Christian plus Robert Normann and Oscar Aleman) that had come up at a giveaway price in the music book section of a local used records store. It's very thorough, to say the least. (Though maybe outdated in places by now due to more recent discoveries.) RIP and thanks for your untiring work that many others have profited from. jazztrain Posted February 10, 2024 Report Posted February 10, 2024 What a loss. I've had many of his solography books for years and find his more recent online files quite handy. I was in contact with him a few times over the years and found him quite pleasant and helpful. RIP Jan. Quote
