AmirBagachelles Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 (edited) Since most/all of the catalogs are in print, it seems worthwhile being aware of which vinyl LPs were mastered in analog. I was listening to the Lester Bowie 5th Power CD today in my car. It sounds really sharp, awful at the high end. Then I noticed it was recorded in '78, so I guess if I see the vinyl I'll be curious, it could well sound way better than the disc. But a lot of the SN/BS vinyl I see around might be digital, since the recording dates are many cases mid to late 80s. I was wondering if anybody else has checked into it or keeps a mental book on this. I know shrugs must, this is right up his alley. thx oh yeah: ** Buy more Soul Note and Black Saint and support a great jazz institution!!! ** Edited April 4, 2004 by AmirBagachelles Quote
brownie Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 I have had this Lester Bowie LP since it was published. Just gave it a spin. Great album which sounds just fine. No digital harshness. Glad I bought all those Black Saint/Soul Note vinyls when they were available. Vinyl lives. And last forever as long as you take good care... Quote
wolff Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 How many titles in their catalog?? I did not care for the music or LP quality of the few titles I bought and later sold. Quote
Claude Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 (edited) Here is their list of currently available LPs: http://www.blacksaint.com/pagine%20web/catalogs.htm I don't know if the older titles (analog recordings) are sourced from digital tapes, but unfortunately that's the case of most new LP pressings today. The remastering is done for both the CD and LP reissues. Only audiophile companies would do seperate digital and analog transfers. It doesn't mean that the sound must inevitably be worse though. wolff Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Thanks, Claude(the link master). I have not noticed the LP's being carried by the usual vendors here in USA. I had no idea they were re-issuing so many on vinyl. Good for them!!! I'll keep an eye out for the recommended titles. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 I noticed Dusty Groove carries new copies of the LPs from time to time. They're about $12.99 usually. The only one of those I haven't seen them stock is the Beaver Harris 2LP. I remember that one having some particularly nice Bluiett solos, but I haven't heard it in a few years. Quote
