romualdo Posted January 12, 2024 Report Posted January 12, 2024 just found this wonderful rendition of "In A Sentimental Mood" by Joe Harriott with The Stan Tracey Big Brass (1969) - is this the same version from the Columbia LP "We Love You Madly"? - sounds like it. Apparantly this is the only known live footage of Joe. also, a few Harriott related clippings from newspapers https://galacticramble.blogspot.com/search/label/Joe Harriott Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted January 12, 2024 Report Posted January 12, 2024 Thanks for this! I know Harriott only through his Indo-Jazz albums (which I LOVE, incidentally). What other albums do you recommend by him? Quote
jlhoots Posted January 12, 2024 Report Posted January 12, 2024 Free Form & Southern Horizons are very good. Quote

I've got the feeling that the recording per the LP was done separately at Lansdowne. Same music, featured artists and band though. Don't forget 'Movement' and 'High Spirits' as well. Very rare LPs, put out on CD by Dutton Vocalion. Edited January 13, 2024 by sidewinder Quote

I would have thought keeping Hum Dono in print would be a money spinner but it has disappeared from the catalogue. Owners retiring perhaps? Quote

They seemed to lose interest in jazz quite a few years ago after putting out a motherlode on CD in the 2000s (most now sold out). Recent releases seem to be SACD, MOR and soul. I guess there is no money in it. Quality of their CDs is superb though. Edited January 14, 2024 by sidewinder Quote
adh1907 Posted January 14, 2024 Report Posted January 14, 2024 Absolutely, their Deram and Argo reissues were so good, you would be tempted to sell your original LPs! Quote

Owners retiring perhaps? was going to suggest Trunk Records for the Hum Dono LP - Johnny Trunk released it once the Dutton Vocalion LP went OOP - pressing got good reviews Just checked the site & it looks like that one has gone too - poor Joe!!! https://trunkrecords.greedbag.com/buy/hum-dono-6/ Quote

colinmce Posted January 16, 2024 Report Posted January 16, 2024 I would agree with everyone here, it's pretty straightforward. A LOT of Harriott has been scraped up for release over the last 10-20 years and while it's all nice to have, imo there's still nothing that tops the studio albums, especially Abstract and Free Form.
