clifford_thornton Posted January 2, 2024 Report Posted January 2, 2024 According to family posts on Facebook, the vocalist Jay Clayton died on December 31, 2023 at 82. Very interesting artist; I never saw her perform in person, alas, but have long enjoyed her diverse body of recordings. RIP. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted January 2, 2024 Report Posted January 2, 2024 (edited) I don't know her. Where would you start with her recordings? Edited January 2, 2024 by Rabshakeh Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 2, 2024 Author Report Posted January 2, 2024 Her voice on Byron Morris' "Blow Thru Your Mind" (specifically the track Kitty Bey) is excellent, not to mention Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians." I also enjoy her Anima LP quite a bit: https://www.discogs.com/release/3230281-Jay-Clayton-All-Out Quote
colinmce Posted January 2, 2024 Report Posted January 2, 2024 This is also an excellent album. RIP. https://www.discogs.com/release/3228940-Quartett-No-Secrets Quote
Ken Dryden Posted January 2, 2024 Report Posted January 2, 2024 Voclaist Judy Niemack told me that Jay Clayton was in hospice care for cancer a few weeks ago. Judy also sent me a CD collaboration that she did with Jay Clayton, which was issued near the end of the year: It was likely one of Jay Clayton's last recordings. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 3, 2024 Report Posted January 3, 2024 R.I.P. I always likd her singing, saw her live when part of this album was recorded: Quote

clifford_thornton Posted January 3, 2024 Author Report Posted January 3, 2024 I should try that one again -- didn't hit me years ago, but that's probably me rather than the record. Quote
russes01 Posted January 5, 2024 Report Posted January 5, 2024 Saw her hers in MPLS about 5 years ago and missed her by one day in NYC with Sheila cause I put it on the wrong day in my calendar (back when you had to keep one). Quote
