Brad Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Yesterday, Marc Myers in JazzWax posted an interview he did with director Carol Chamberland who made a film or a video about the legendary Bop City in San Francisco. The film has been seldom seen but JazzWax provided a link to see it. https://www.jazzwax.com/2023/12/int...s&utm_content=Interview:+Carol+P.+Chamberland Today he provided the link and how to see it. The film is only available to watch until Sunday. https://www.jazzwax.com/2023/12/carol-p-chamberlands-the-legend-of-bop-city.html Quote
Quasimado Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Many thanks for this! San Francisco's black jazz scene in the 50's tends to be overlooked in comparison to LA's Central Avenue, but it was jumping, and Jimbo's was at its heart. In this film musicians and patrons (and Jimbo himself) reminisce about his legendary club and the scene at the time. There are some some great photos and stories of Bird, Dexter, Billie etc. As Brad says, you can still see it through to Sunday. Follow the links above. Don't miss it! Quote
mikeweil Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 Great stuff, I wonder where she got that truckload of photos. It's a shame this cannot be widely available due to prolems with music licensing. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 (edited) It helped me a lot to read the interview with Carol Chamberlain: https://www.jazzwax.com/2023/12/interview-carol-p-chamberland.html Edited December 28, 2023 by mikeweil Quote

Brad Posted December 29, 2023 Author Report Posted December 29, 2023 I found this brief article by Carol Chamberland about Bop City, Jimbo’s Bop City: Historical Essay Unfortunately, I’m not able to access the original article in California State History, from which this was excerpted. Quote
