mikelz777 Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Mike, I had you pegged for Easter!!! I have the Desmond Mosaic box and the Wilson CD you picked up, and in my book they are all five stars. I've never heard Tubby Hayes. In fact, I had never heard of him until the Brits at AAJ raved about him. One day I'll pick something of his up. edit for typo Yeah, I might have made it to Easter if I didn't have that "music money" sitting in the Paypal account. Maybe it'll be different now that the money is gone. If you're interested in checking out Tubby Hayes, you could do a lot worse than checking out "Commonwealth Blues". http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AA4GI...d=37C465BB2Z8IR It's a Spanish BBC radio broadcast which features Tubby with a trio in the studio. It's a series of four sets of 3 songs each which open and close with "Tubby's Blues". (I imagine there were announcements, ads and news between each set.) On the first set, he is featured playing tenor sax. In the second set, he is featured playing vibes. On the third set he is featured playing flute. On the fourth set I believe it features one song each on tenor, vibes and flute. From the music samples, it sounds like a great CD and shows off how skilled Tubby was on each of his instruments. jazzbo Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge. My vinyl of these shows the scars of youthful exuberance and recklessness. I recently bought Tales from Topographic Oceans on cd, and it sounded so good I went for these. I might later get Relayer. . . .That's about the end of my Yes interest. Quote

I recently bought Tales from Topographic Oceans on cd, and it sounded so good I went for these. I might later get Relayer. . . .That's about the end of my Yes interest. Those are three really good ones, probably their best. Relayer is good too. If you can get it for cheap you might want to check out Going for the One -- there's some good stuff one that one (especially "Awaken"). Guy Quote
jazzbo Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Yeah I have decent vinyl of Going for the One and Tormato. . . . They're okay, they're pretty good. About that time though I got away from listening to prog rock and a lot of other things and into playing blues rock in a band and listening to jazz as my personal steady diet. I just don't "feel" GFTO and Tormato the same way, but I might grab the cds in time if I feel the urge for more Yes after these arrive. I think it's funny that I really loved Bruford in Yes, and never really liked the King Crimson albums with him, or Earthworks. Quote
(BB) Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Oh happy day! According to the post mark my records have been in the mail for an entire week. Fantabulous ~ Oliver Nelson Tenor Gladness ~ Lew Tabackin & Warne Marsh Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh Dolpy ~ The Berlin Concerts Charles Mingus ~ Mingus (a cheapo jazzman pressing that luckily does not have the constant hiss that was on the Italian Candid I had). Oh and I've got the house to my self for a few hours. Quote

BFrank Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 I ordered Artie Shaw's "Self Portrait", which I just realized is OOP. I did several searches and found it for sale (and ON sale) at www.sonymusicstore.com. We'll wait and see if they really have it in stock. I remember hearing great things about this when it was released, but never got around to picking it up. Quote
king ubu Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 too many things... had to get rid of one of those sane tooths and did some pre-horror shopping... The second Weston is a limited 3CD reissue of his three 1989 albums (Potraits of Duke, Potraits of Monk & Self Potraits). Highly welcome since I never managed to get hold of the Duke and I got this one for 15€, which here is budget prize for 1 (ONE!) CD... Quote

paul secor Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Complete Bud Powell On Verve I've been thinking about this one for over a year. Finally pulled the trigger. I finally got that one fairly recently too. I already had a lot of the material, but it was worth getting the collection just to be able to read the commentary by Barry Harris and this Board's own Michael Weiss. I'm sure you'll enjoy it for many years. Quote
