Chuck Nessa Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 Rev. J M Gates – Bound for Heaven Is that this, Chuck? MG So, is that preachin' or singin' or some of both? The Reverend recorded around 200 sides - sermons with singing responses from the "congregation" mostly. These sides were done 1926-1941 for a number of companies including Paramount, Gennett, Columbia, Okeh and Victor. I was first introduced to his stuff on a Herwin lp in the '70s. He was a "star". The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 (edited) Rev. J M Gates – Bound for Heaven Is that this, Chuck? MG So, is that preachin' or singin' or some of both? Some of both. Gates is great! The best selling black artist of 1930! Ellington, Armstrong, Smith - nowhere! (I'm in the process of buying all 9 of his CD complete works compilations on Document. Got 5 so far.) MG Edited September 7, 2006 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote

At 10 past 10, DHL brought me the Sonny Stitt Mosaic box I don't have any of this material, so it's a good buy for me. Then at 1 o'clock, the postman brought another box set: Cousin Joe, the complete recordings And I only have 1 78 of Cousin Joe, so it's a goodbye for him, too. Now, when am I going to get time to listen to all this? MG Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Just as I was about to do a runner for the bus to Pontypridd, the postman brought these, but I had to zoom off without even opening the packet! Rhoda, with Plas Johnson and Red Holloway on tenors. Just starting on this - a mighty groove! (Is anything else possible?) Crash, with Dr Lonnie Smith. I wouldn't have known about this but CDBaby advertised it on the page with the Rhoda Scott. And in Ponty, Terry had managed to get this for me, after it being out of stock for a couple of weeks This is great! Thanks to Rod for introducing it to me (or me to it). Wow! MG Quote

brownie Posted September 27, 2006 Report Posted September 27, 2006 Did my best to stay off a record buying spree for the past month, however could not resist getting the following vinyls when I came upon them in a small shop in southern France: - an original copy (without its cover) of the Thelonious Monk piano solo 10-incher on the Swing label, - Nick Brignolia's 'Baritone Madness' (with Pepper Adams, Ted Curson, etc...) on Beehive. I had an original (complete with cover) of the Monk solo album which I was stupid enough to trade for various LPs in one of my first visit to the Jazz Record Center in New York a long time ago. Sound on the Swing Monk is still unmatched! Quote
Ken Dryden Posted September 27, 2006 Report Posted September 27, 2006 I've laid off buying music for a few weeks, my wife just got a new truck... But I won't skip Jazz Record Center when we head to NYC $$$. At least the hotel room will be free courtesy of credit card points. Quote
