mikeweil Posted May 30, 2006 Report Share Posted May 30, 2006 Some Japanese CDs arrived this week: George Gruntz 'Noon in Tunisia' (Saba/MPS, 1967) Sahib Shihab, Jean-Luc Ponty, George Gruntz, Eberhard Weber, Daniel Humair, Salah El Mahdi, The Beduins. Whoa--Sahib Shihab? How is this? I'm the lucky owner of an original MPS LP copy of this. Shihab plays sopranop sax exclusively on it, in a slightly orientalized fashion. It's nice, an inpsired meeting of jazz and Tunisian musicians sensitively arranged by Gruntz. There also is a TV documentary made for SWR tv by Berendt during the trip, which is very nice, and a HR radio recording of a later reunion that starred Joe Henderson that I witnessed at the Frankfurt jazz festival. The first lot, from CD Universe, contained: Melvin Sparks’ new one – Groove on up Big Jay McNeely – Live at Cisco’s – my old copy of this is unplayable so I’m really glad it’s been reissued (Pooh, only poxy little pix of this on the web.) Tiny Grimes & Coleman Hawkins – Blues groove And from an Amazon UK seller My first Ursula Rucker – Supa Sista Looking forward mucho to hearing this: Rap plus beautiful music. These albums are the real answer to what Kenny Drew Jr was saying. To listen to these is to realise what beauty there can be in Rap and, therefore, by how much most Rap is falling short. ejp626 Posted June 3, 2006 Report Share Posted June 3, 2006 (edited) I'm going to be mighty tempted by some of the new Conns this summer, especially Holiday for Skins. Generally, I have been pretty good (i.e. saving not spending money), though last week I bought Marvin Gaye's I Want You. Today I just splurged on a box set of Messiaen's recordings called Messiaen Edition, which is 18 CDs covering most of his output. Apparently this has Messiaen himself playing the definitive version of some organ works and his wife playing many of his solo piano pieces. Can't wait for it to arrive. I'd say that Messiaen and Shostakovich are my two favorite 20th C. composers (not counting Ellington or other jazz composers), and with this set I will be very well covered for both of them.
