These are location recordings from Coltrane's engagement at the Jazz Workshop, where Wes Montgomery sat in with the band. It was presumed for years that there were no recordings of this collaboration, as none had turned up in the 60+ intervening years, so it was quite a surprise when the granddaughter of the fan who recorded one evening of the engagement on a Webcor miniature portable tape recorder discovered a carton in her recently deceased grandmother's attic in Walnut Creek with 3-inch reels in white boxes marked "Coltrane Sextet, Jazz Workshop." The woman, Charlotte Weintraub, brought the tapes to the offices of the S.F. Jazz organization, where they were listened to by members of the education program who were startled by the find once they heard the guitar in the mix. Other jazz scholars weighed in and declared the tapes authentic. I've heard that while not pristine, the recordings have quite serviceable audio, though lots of audience chatter and clinking glasses can be heard. The personnel is listed as Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Reggie Workman, and special guest Wes Montgomery. Among the tunes is a nearly 45-minute version of "Impressions," likely the longest performance of this composition until Coltrane's final group in 1966, as well as Montgomery's original composition "West Coast Blues." The release date for the two-CD set is listed as May 6. Please remember today's date. Joe Henderson's "Mirror, Mirror." Albeit respectful, I'm not the biggest Henderson fan, but the tracks I listened to on You Tube sounded top notch. With Chick Corea, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins, what could go wrong? Damn, I've bought a lot of CDs lately, jazz and classical. No regrets so far, not until the money runs out -- it's just that as I wander around the 'Net, things seem to speak to me. Quote

Larry Kart Posted April 4, 2023 Report Posted April 4, 2023 I bought my first Mosaic sets -- Mulligan/Baker and Monk -- in 1981, the year Mosaic was founded, I was 39. Now Mosaics line my basement walls. I'll be 81 this May. Quote

sidewinder Posted April 6, 2023 Report Posted April 6, 2023 Picked up a copy of the Konitz/Mulligan Tone Poet. Some good deals to be had (especially in the US). Quote
T.D. Posted April 7, 2023 Report Posted April 7, 2023 Roll of the dice, used copy at OK price: Have been getting into Japanese jazz, expect to enjoy Disc 1 "Jazz Ground". No idea what's in store with Disc 2 "Under Ground", anything is possible, weirdness is OK but I hope it doesn't turn out to be horrible. 🤞 🤣 Quote

Justin V Posted May 6, 2023 Report Posted May 6, 2023 (edited) I found this on Discogs for $20. I've heard them all before and only have low-quality downloads of two volumes, one glitched, so I'm excited to have it all in good quality. Taking advantage of cheap shipping for add-ons, I looked for bargains and added on these 3 for less than $5 and another buck for shipping. Edited May 6, 2023 by Justin V Quote
