Creative Arts Ensemble - One Step Out (Nimbus West, 1981)R-12829773-1545939102-6741.jpeg.jpg

A great record, probably one of my favourite non-Tapscott UGMAAs, that I was pleased to find at Cafe OTO. But when I took it home I was surprised to find it is a double LP re-release. Literally 8-9 minutes of music for each side of vinyl. What's the logic?

I’ve pre-ordered that one. From the samples I could say: it’s outstanding!

I found a UK stockist for a lot less than £75 from Sam and have pre=ordered myself. I agree about the samples.

I'm not sure why I expected you to know if it was good if you'd just purchased it

That's a good 'un indeed. I haven't had it out for a while, is it cut at 45rpm for supposed better SQ?

I never think to go to Oto to shop...

For the music's quality even this price is sort of a pittance ....

In which case the £55 I just paid is a steal!

It's not far from me: perfect distance for getting kids to sleep in a pram, having a coffee and accidentally buying a record (who could have foreseen?), and then heading home in time for the afternoon session. I also wanted to buy The Wire this week for the Pat Thomas I/V.

OTO has a new bookshelf that is the chief draw for me at the moment. It is really an incredible selection. I have no idea whether it will keep up the pace, but I don't know of any bookshop of any genre that can keep up with it at the moment.

Sounds like a perfect Sunday plan to me, it's odd how records have a habit of inveigling themselves into such plans. I didn't know Thomas was in the Wire, I'll buy that although I find much of the magazine has left me very far behind.

Oto certainly seem to have invested in the book angle a lot over the last year.  I'll admit to looking at many of the titles with a dread feeling of 'whoosh;

:D .... jokes aside, this is great music .... Nathan Davis in peak form and the Rhythm Section is formidable ....

:tup:tup thanks for the reassurance

Happens you are right.

Cut at 45rpm on two LPs for supposedly better SQ (although I can't say I can hear it, even on the new system) and for added inconvenience and cost.

Reminds me of this classic:

Anyway, thank you for letting me know, as I would not have figured it out otherwise, being a bear of small brain. I had wondered why the peppy female singer on the version I had heard had become a man singing legato on the vinyl, but had thought nothing of it.

😂👍

There's at least one other Nimbus West reissue that's cut the same, Jesse someone. I think it's Outernational Sounds or similar name that does them like that

There is still a record shop in the first district of Vienna, it´s EMI. This has been when I was still a kid and bought records there. Great that it survived for so long time, and they still have enough jazz, so that even I can find sometimes something I didn´t have.

Thats where I usually go if I go shoppin in the Inner City with my wife. Two days ago it was a special occasion because we are preparing our 25th anniversary of wedding. You know, dress for the occasion, and above all, the right shoes.  I like shopping and have a good taste for fashion and shows so she is really happy to do this things together with me.

After we found the right shoes in a really fancy luxury shoe shop we were happy and relaxed and enjoyed the early evening in the fancy innercity of Vienna, among all them tourists.

And as it is, we passed by the record shop and my wife says, hey why don´t we go inside and look a bit, I´d like to buy you somethings.

Our game is always the same, I tell her....look a little if you find something for me, and though she´s not a jazz fan she knows what artists I like.

She passed by the rafts with Austrian or European jazz and asked: Monk? I said, might be hard I think I have all of them. "Mingus"? I said good choice, but I have lot of Mingus. She picked up the "Newport Rebels" and I said gee I don´t have that.

Herbie Hancock she also "knows". I said, yeah but not Headhunters I have that, and all BN I also have. She picks up "VSOP live under the Sky" and I really didn´t have that.

After that "jazz exercise" she said "When I was a little girl, my parents once took me to the opera "Magic Flute" by Mozart, I liked that. So I said ok let´s buy it for you. This was a bit hard for me since we are no classic specialists. I saw some edition that seemed to be old, decades old, so better not and asked what is a more new edition because it might sound better, and that I bought for her. I also heard that once, I remember that soprano "Queen of the Night" ...
