Last night I opened up Bobby Hutcherson's Oblique, which is so highly regarded here.

I bought it about five years ago, marked down to $4.99, and it languished at the bottom of my stack all that time.

I like it, but I like Stick Up better.

Sunday:

When in York, I found the 'Seven Steps' individual discs which would complete the period (ie. the ones I didn't buy during the week).

And , they were even cheaper :duh:.

So, Seven Steps and Miles In Tokyo which at first listen sounds like a hell of an album. Not sure how far down this route they could've gone as opposed to the Wayne route. Rivers seems to change the way the whole band sound.

Also, True Blue and Night Dreamer.

The Bad Plus - These Are The Vistas

Not my cup of tea. I don't recognize the songs, which I think are boring anyway, and both the piano playing and the drumming are heavy handed.

The guys at AAJ raved about this one for months. I guess they were a younger crowd who recognized the songs.

I'll put this aside and try it again in a few months. Right now, I think it's the worst album I've bought in quite some time.

Been listening to the so called "neo soul" (and some proper, earlier soul music as well) lately. Picked up these:

D'Angelo: Brown Sugar - has couple of outstanding tracks, the title track and "Sh*t, Damn, Motherf*cker", but a lot of weaker filler stuff as well.

D'Angelo: Voodoo - much more coherent

Dwele: "Subject" - a couple of great tracks only, not worth the hype IMO

(John Legend: Get Lifted - haven't listened to this yet)

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes: Wake Up Everybody - a classic, and the title track's message obviously still is something to consider... Teddy Pendergrass kicks ass.

Leon Ware: Musical Massage - the album he had to do, because he gave Marvin "I Want You";

Luther Vandross: S/T (2001) - far from Vandross' best, the first track and a few of the last are great, but there's a lot of overproduced, corny, pop crap.
