mjazzg Posted September 13, 2020 Report Posted September 13, 2020 All by 8 o'clock on a Sunday morning, impressive! Nice selection. 'Black Palladins' is such a great album. Honest Jons? Yesterday...all online Elvin Jones - Live At The Lighthouse. LP, been meaning to buy this for ages. Yesterday was the day. Emma Jane Thackeray - Um Yang. 12" EP, enjoyed her previous releases and this sounded great on the radio Hozan Yamamoto - Ginkai. One of my favourite albums ever. CD to back up my LP and to hear if it works any better as one 'suite' Quote
Rabshakeh Posted September 13, 2020 Report Posted September 13, 2020 Well... in the last 24 hours. HJs Coal Drop, again, yes. They have a really impressive amount of stock for such a tiny shop.hya Black Paladins is one of my all time favourites of this era. I was pleased to find it in the wild, even in a slightly rough copy. i love that Elvin. One of the best covers of any jazz LP too. The late Steve Grossman tearing it up. The Yamamoto sounds interesting. I’ll nose that one out. Quote

Good as that double LP is, this is one where the two separate CDs (and the Mosaic) have a strong edge with the excellent additional tracks. Maybe a Tone Poet issue on 3LPs is in order? Quote

sidewinder Posted September 13, 2020 Report Posted September 13, 2020 (edited) Worth picking up the 2 CDs if you can find them around. Those were two of the earliest Blue Note CDs I ever bought - at the huge Sam The Record Man Store in Toronto in the longbox format. On the day I picked those up I thought all my Xmases had come at once as they were $Cdn for £ (, nothing changes) and I also picked up a couple of Andrew Hills and Mobley’s ‘No Room For Squares’. Still have them. My only regret with the Elvin Mosaic is that it didn’t also come out in LP format. Edited September 13, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
duaneiac Posted September 16, 2020 Report Posted September 16, 2020 Pre-ordered this set due for a 10/23 release -- CROOKED PIECE OF TIME: THE ATLANTIC & ASYLUM ALBUMS is a limited edition, 7-CD boxed set that includes every studio album John Prine recorded between his debut in 1971 and 1980, presented in mini-LP sleeves: John Prine (1971), Diamonds In The Rough (1972), Sweet Revenge (1973), Common Sense (1975), Bruised Orange (1978), Pink Cadillac (1979) and Storm Windows (1980). The clamshell box also contains poster inserts and a 20-page booklet with new liner notes written by acclaimed music journalist David Fricke. The cover painting, commissioned especially for the set, is by artist Joshua Petker and is based on a photo of Prine taken by Jim Shea. Taking its name from a song on Bruised Orange, CROOKED PIECE OF TIME represents an essential and timeless American songbook and includes tracks that have become modern-day folk and country standards like: “Hello In There,” “Sam Stone,” “Illegal Smile,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Paradise” and “That’s The Way The World Goes Round.” The expansive collection also contains favorites like: “Far From Me,” “Dear Abby,” “Christmas In Prison,” “Fish and Whistle” and “Automobile.” Quote

duaneiac Posted October 15, 2020 Report Posted October 15, 2020 This was Dave Brubeck's final recording project. I was concerned that it was forgotten about already and was never going to see the light of day. Glad it will finally be released next month; I indulged in a 15% off sale at Deep Discount and bought the following. Quote

Justin V Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 I meant to pick this up years ago. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 16, 2020 Report Posted October 16, 2020 I ordered another Mal Waldron disc, a collaboration with Steve Lacy recorded at Sweet Basil: Found a good deal on this CD. I couldn't resist. Plus this LP: I've been streaming and enjoying this. Figured it was time to get the real deal. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 (edited) I spent yesterday on a final trip round North London record shops before further lockdown restrictions are reintroduced in London. I picked up Live At Mintons by Eddie Lockjaw Davis / Jimmy Griffin and Raw Materials and Residuals by Julius Hemphill at one, and a copy of Creative Music Orchestra by Anthony Braxton at the other. sidewinder Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 (edited) Blimey - is Tier 2 affecting London shops that much? Just bought a copy of the CD version of the Larry Young Mosaic. I have 1 CD of this from Mosaic and it sounds very good on my system and also the full LP version and thought it would be good to, as well as having the LPs, also to have a full digital Mosaic for CD and steaming convenience. One of my very favourite Mosaics so it deserves this 5-star multi-format treatment ! Never been over-happy with the compressed sound of those Conns. Superficially they can sound impressive but I find the coherence, timing and panning can be off at times. Mosaic’s treatment is straight-ahead and true. Edited October 17, 2020 by sidewinder Quote

I'm wondering if I should do similar soon. Totally ridiculous. Edited October 17, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
mjazzg Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 Yeah, they're jokers really. Take the top Discogs price and add %%. Website is a very small fraction of their stock. Successfully riding the 'vinyls' wave and fleecing the Hackney hipsters 😃 Quote
sidewinder Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 Thought so..... a fool and his/her money etc. etc. Quote

Yo Yo have tweeted some nice stock but their prices hurt Alan's in East Finchley and then The Little Record Shop in Hornsey. Definitely a different experience to the Hackney Hypsters. The difference in price is pretty remarkable. The Hornsey one, which is where I got the Braxton, I'd recommend at the moment. Alan's has a lot of new jazz in, mostly in the Soul Jazz or smoother end of the market. Lots of Jack McDuff etc. Only about a quarter had made it to the shelves though so perhaps worth checking in. I find Yo Yo a bit of a mix. I think that they overprice what they think they'll sell. The stuff that doesn't make it to the website is sometumes more moderate. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 Noticed that Yo-Yo/Hackney Hypsters have a Michael Garrick ‘Heart is a Lotus’ on their site but at £400 it is stratospheric, even for this rare LP and condition is far from perfect. Quote
