HutchFan Posted May 13, 2020 Report Posted May 13, 2020 Some classical discs I've ordered lately: Hard to go wrong with Martinon in French repertoire. ... I know the "Organ" Symphony -- like everyone else. But none of the others. I already have (and like) Thomson's second volume of Bax Tone Poems. ... Always nice to fill a missing "Volume 1" gap when "Volume 2" is already on the shelf. Or am I the only person who thinks like that? I have a couple WTC recordings by pianists. None by harpsichordists. And Gilbert just passed recently ... More Sibelius from Vänskä. Quote
mjazzg Posted May 16, 2020 Report Posted May 16, 2020 Morton Feldman Piano Music [5 CD] from Another Timbre. Possibly the ideal lockdown soundtrack as time stretches... and in total contrast Gordon Beck Quartet - Experiment In Pops [Major Minor] Mono LP. For when things getter livelier... Quote

EKE BBB Posted June 2, 2020 Report Posted June 2, 2020 Just bought this FSR CD, since it contains several sides by Don Byas not included in 'The Complete 1946-51 European small group recordings" on Definitive. Physical CD, which is not very usual here these days. Lately I have decided not to expand my CD collection and shelves unless it is absolutely necessary and conversely I am purchasing mp3 downloads... But this is one of those ocasions when it is absolutely necessary... Quote

I have never heard Tomlinson, but that band at that price was a no-brainer. Thanks for the recommendation though it cost me much more than you paid at the princely sum of $3.59. Quote

I'm glad to hear that. That was the album that prompted the thread about lesser-known leaders with well-known sidemen. I posted some thoughts about it there. Let me know what you think. My two latest purchases are: This will almost certainly be one for the recommendation thread mentioned above, with a band of Mulgrew Miller, Ron Carter and Lewis Nash. The cheapest copy was an autographed one. That led me to search for autographed CDs on eBay. I picked this one up for $2.50 plus shipping: I really like the Hedges album I have, Live at Andy's. I'm not sure how well-known he was outside of the Milwaukee and Chicago scenes, but Hedges was a fine clarinetist worth remembering. Edited June 2, 2020 by Justin V Quote

The cheapest copy was an autographed one. The lesser known leader thread is what prompted me to search for it and I enjoyed the Tomlinson disc. I've spun it twice and find his compositions and arrangements thoughtful and easy if that makes sense. For studying with Barry Harris, I didn't pick up on a heavy influence on his sound. Not sure how long the studying took place though. The Charles Owens is a Joy. I picked it up in Atlanta at a record shop while killing some time. I had read a review, probably on AAJ and when I saw it in the wild picked it up. You will enjoy it indeed. And It does fit in with the Lesser known leader thread. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted June 2, 2020 Report Posted June 2, 2020 I ordered a bunch of Video Arts CDs from Japan from Tommy's Jazz yesterday. I have been thinking about those Renee Rosnes CDs for a while but his offer of free shipping for 10 or more CDs got me to stretch a bit. VACM1248 Ryan. mjazzg Posted June 6, 2020 Report Posted June 6, 2020 That's a hell of a line up. I just checked how it's configured on the individual discs - very interesting indeed. One to seriously think about for when my bust CD player's back in action post-lockdown Quote
ejp626 Posted June 6, 2020 Report Posted June 6, 2020 As already mentioned in the Bandcamp thread, I went a little wild and ordered 4 albums by Alexander Hawkins, including Unit[e] and No Now is So. I also picked up some digital downloads from Eugene Chadbourne: The Lost Eddie Chatterbox Sessions (which is basically Chadbourne on solo steel guitar playing jazz standards (so a real departure for him)) and Jungle Cookies, which is a more typical experimental sound collage. They can be purchased here -- https://eugenechadbourne-documentation.squarespace.com/?category=digital+downloads I'm tempted by Chadbourne's Roll Over Berlusconi, but this is only available as a vinyl + mp3 download on Bandcamp, and the shipping price of the vinyl to Canada (or the US) is on the steep side. I would definitely order just the download if that becomes available down the road. Quote

One to seriously think about for when my bust CD player's back in action post-lockdown Usually these boxes from Not Two take about a month. I’m thoroughly enjoying the Wooden Box. Maybe a bit traditional (some standard Brotzmann duos with Nilssen-Love - very good but not otherworldly) but the disc with Guy & Leandre together with other musicians added is pretty great. There are also 3 or 4 various trio or quartet circa 20 minutes or so pieces that are terrific. Plus it’s the most attractive box set I own. Quote
Justin V Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) I found this on Discogs without the box (and book?) for $37.74 after tax and shipping. Although it is available through my library's streaming service, I couldn't resist grabbing the physical copy for such a good price. Edited June 12, 2020 by Justin V Quote

Justin V Posted June 29, 2020 Report Posted June 29, 2020 I've enjoyed the Village Vanguard date for years and finally ordered this for under $40 after shipping. The two-disc Olympia set has seen some play here this weekend. Quote

Dan Gould Posted July 2, 2020 Report Posted July 2, 2020 Very excited to find out about this one, and score a US-located copy in short order: Eddie Swanston, Treasures Most important member of the group is Bubba Brooks, but Al Casey is on guitar, drummer is Kalil Mahdi who replaced Bill Dowdy in the Three Sounds, and does anyone recognize the leader? He played organ on one of the Ike Quebec 45s sessions, as well as records with Armstrong and Eddie Jefferson too. Hopefully this lives up to the reputations of the band members. Also scored what seems to be a very rare Hal Singer recording from around 1970. Curious enough to go for a cassette copy, seems to be limited more or less to African distribution and never on CD.
