This arrived today. Had been looking for the Japan mini lp replica sleeve version for ages.  Yes I know about the upcoming Mosaic box, but it's one of my absolute favourite albums of all time.

Stopped at a local shop on the way home from work tonight. Here's what I brought home:

Irakere - The Best of Irakere (Columbia/Legacy) CD

Rodney Jones - Dreams and Stories (Savant) CD

Herbie Mann - The Evolution of Mann (Atlantic) 2 LPs

Carmen McRae - Here to Stay (Decca/GRP) CD

Sonny Rollins - Global Warming (Milestone) CD

Kenny Wheeler - Deer Wan (ECM) CD

CLASSICAL

Brahms - Lieder / Christa Ludwig, Leonard Bernstein (Columbia) LP

Brahms - Complete Piano Quartets / Beaux Arts Trio, Walter Trampler (Philips) 2 CDs

Schumann - Piano Sonatas / Lazar Berman (Melodiya/Columbia) LP

Rachmaninoff - "The Complete Rachmaninoff, Vol. 1: Acoustic Recordings (1919-1924)" / Sergei Rachmaninoff (RCA) 3 LPs

Rachmaninoff - "The Complete Rachmaninoff, Vol. 2: Works for Solo Piano..." / Sergei Rachmaninoff (RCA) 3 LPs

Believe it or not, since most of these came from the store's dollar bins, the total cost was less than $25.  :D

Deer Wan is probably my single favorite Kenny Wheeler record. But previously I only owned the LP.  It'll be nice to be able to listen to it at work, in the car, etc. going forward. 🙂

- Tete Montoliu - Barcelona Meeting (FSR)

- Marilyn Moore - Moody / Oh, Captain! (FSR)

- Johnny Griffin & Lockjaw Davis - At Onkel Pö’s Carnegie Hall, Hamburg 1975 (NDR)

I also have the Griff/Jaws 1975 stuff. Nice stuff, maybe Jaws is a bit too off the mike, and your beloved Mr. Montoliu , and I also was really Looking Forward hearing him in this surroundigs, is not so well recorded. But what can be heard is that on that last mega Long track "Funky Flutes" he really stretches out, fantastic ! And not to Forget Art Taylor, one of my favourite Drummers.

Love that Abrams set.  One of his very best and needs CD reissue.

Looks good, but I found the Reprise and Warner material is tame in comparison to the Josie recordings. There was a double CD on Charly that is enough for me. The first two CDs of this box, that's the real thing.

On the whole, yeah, but there's enough spread across the later albums (especially Rejuvenation) that make me happy to get them on CD in a packaging such as this.

AFAIC, Zig is one of the greatest drummers of the 20th Century. He was one of the main guys to get my head out of my ass about the whole "swing is a jazz thing" nonsense. No - swing is a human thing, period, and New Orleans swing only sometimes occurs in "jazz" (and sometimes not there at all!)

Zig...that shit runs deep! He wasn't the first, nor will he be the last. But he was one who grabbed me and pulled me into it all the way.

(Al Jackson, that's another one...the list goes on...)

meters~~~~~_gettingfu_101b.jpg

Looked to see, before ordering, how much Meters I had on (legit) CD and was shocked/horrified to find out that all I had was LPs and 45s. A damn good number of those,. but no CDs??? WTF?!?!?!?

Anyway, looks to be a dream set, and this outfit is legit AFAIK, so "problem" solved.

Definitely legit label.

Found these CDs today during a lunchtime record store run:

- Kenny Barron Quintet - Concentric Circles (Blue Note)

- Harold Danko - New Autumn (SteepleChase)

- Harold Danko - Nightscapes (SteepleChase)

- Chico Freeman Quintet with Arthur Blythe - Focus (Contemporary)

- "Papa" Jo Jones - Jo Jones Special (Fresh Sound / Vanguard) -- with Lucky Thompson :)

- Nicholas Payton - Sonic Trance (Warner Brothers)

- Sarah Vaughan - I Love Brazil (Pablo)

The bottoming-out of the CD market continues. I got all these at absurdly low prices, none more than $3.
