It's still hard to believe Kevin Mahogany is gone.

Yes indeed - I happened to witness his first and last performance here in town, which also happened to be the first and last of the touring agent involved, who had to retire after back problems involving surgery. Several aspects of an era now gone.

Yesterday these two arrived:

I found these at a record store that recently re-opened in our town.

Is it the same store with the same stock as before?

I can think of a few places I wish that could happen to!

It is the same store but it must have been closed for 10 years. I was driving through town yesterday and it caught my eye and my first reaction was that it must be an old sign but it wasn’t.  I went there today and, yup, same location and same owner. I think a lot of the stock was probably the same. He said to me, hey, I know you, you’re the jazz guy. I laughed. He said he wanted to reopen the store and the landlord offered him a good rent, cheaper than he was paying 10 years ago. Imagine that.

Well I bought it about 15 days ago but it just showed up, and I'm very excited it did:

Jay McShann, Jumpin' the Blues (Definitive Black & Blue)

About two months ago I was perusing the Black & Blue listings on discogs and came across an LP led by Jay, three tracks were with Milt Buckner on organ and I verified those three were on the Definitive Black & Blue release with Jay and Milt as co-leaders and it looked to all the world like the remaining five tracks, Jay + rhythm with George Kelly and Tiny Grimes, were orphan tracks. Couldn't find 'em anywhere so I pulled the trigger on a purchase from a French dealer, for the LP, just to get those tunes ... turned out he only communicated in French, refused to ship a CD that I threw in to the order as a single shipment, so I got ripped off for shipping charges, and his VG+ was a lot closer to VG-. Was going to take hours to clean up the pops but I decided to look again, maybe find another copy for a reasonable price in better shape.

That's where JazzMessengers came in. Turned out there was a now out of print CD issue of those five "orphan tracks" that had two alternates and four unissued tunes added!  It went from about 24 minutes of new music in terrible shape to nearly 60 in that fine B&B sound.

The only way it could be sweeter would be if it were unissued Bubba Brooks but I'll take George Kelly any day. :)

With a trip to Princeton Record Exchange looming, I visited a record store in Pittsburgh and stuck to a budget.  For $14.92 after tax, I bought:

Hal Russell NRG Ensemble - The Hal Russell Story

Sheila Jordan and Harvie S. - Songs from Within

Clare Fischer - Out of the Blue

Milo Petersen and the Jazz Disciples - Jazz Dignitaries

Amina Claudine Myers - Jumping in the Sugar Bowl

Dan Haerle/Jack Mouse/Bob Bowman - The Truth of the Matter

After what has been a long day, it was nice to come home with a modest stack of music I'm excited to hear.

That Joe Hen box is a treasure trove!  His Milestone years are tremendously under-appreciated, IMO.

And that Clare Fischer big band disc is sweet too. :tup

I have those five and they are all good albums too!

Did Muse ever reissue that Earl Hines concert on CD?  It's a great one. but one of many great albums by Earl Hines from that "comeback" phase of his career, so perhaps this one got overlooked?

I just checked discogs.  Looks like the music was issued digitally one time -- on a Vogue/Savoy CD in France:

There's no mention of a Muse CD issue.

Probably for the reason you said. There's no shortage of post-Little Theater/"comeback" recordings. ;)

Wow! Here's to that scenario replicating itself all over the world!

So I live in King of Prussia.  We have the largest shopping mall in the USA, in terms of number of stores (over 400).  Not one is a music or book store.
