alankin Posted July 4, 2016 Report Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) Duke Ellington – The Complete Duke Ellington 1947-1952 [revised edition, 1989] (Columbia / Sony Music (France)) I've been looking for this set for a while and found an inexpensive copy from a marketplace seller on UK Amazon. sidewinder Posted July 4, 2016 Report Posted July 4, 2016 Spent today in London so was able to check out Rays Jazz, Fopp etc. From Rays I picked Gerald Wilson's 'Legacy' for half price and the Verve 2CD 'More Than Mambo' in the 'Take 2' series from the 90s, which eluded me until now. Fopp delivered the Blakey 'Jazz Messengers' Impulse for £3 . Some of the prices in Rays were optimistic. £300 for a s/h Miles Plugged Nickel CD set ! Quote

HutchFan Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Ordered a few LPs from Dusty Groove tonight: - Bobby Watson - All Because of You (Roulette) - Lee Konitz Meets Warne Marsh Again (PAUSA) - Walter Norris - Stepping on Cracks (Progressive) Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 20, 2016 Report Posted July 20, 2016 Wolfgang's has the Jazz Record Mart stock listed (well, some portion of it): http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/sellers/jazz-record-mart/608.html Just received JR Monterose Quartet, Lush Life (Progressive) I'd hesitate to recommend them at least for their shipping practices. The LP plus two CDs got me a $9.50 charge for 'standard' shipping which turned out to be Media Mail. Not only do they not make it clear that you get Media Mail (the alternatives are two-day or one day options) but jeez, same three items from the Bastards would be less than $9.50 and that would be for Priority Mail. BTW recently reissued as "J.R Monterose - Welcome Back" in Japan with the cover art used for the Progressive/Teichiku release in Japan in 1979 .... Quote

Dan Gould Posted July 24, 2016 Report Posted July 24, 2016 I will definitely listen to the Monterose and report before I get to this, latest purchase: Quote
mikeweil Posted July 24, 2016 Report Posted July 24, 2016 (edited) Stopped by old friends in Lüneburg on our way to the North Eastern German coast and stepped into some antiquarian book and record shop before having dinner at a fine Persian restaurant - bought a German LP from 1975 reissuing some Mat Mathews tracks originally released on Brunswick 78's and EPs: Herbie Mann, Dick Katz, Percy Heath, Kenny Clarke, Max Wayne, Walter Bolden are the sidemen. AFAIK know this LP was a rare reissue - there was a British LP that did not include as many tracks. Someone should have made a CD with Mathews' comlete Brunswick tracks - there are only six more than on this LP. Will have to wail until I get back home in mid-August before I can give it a listen ... HutchFan Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Ordered these LPs from a vendor on discogs. All LPs in VG+ or better condition. Total outlay $35 -- and that includes shipping. Bill Barron - Jazz Caper (Muse) Features a killer lineup. Along with brother Kenny, the band consists of Jimmy Owens, Buster Williams and Ed Blackwell. Earl Hines - The Quintessential Recording Session (Chiaroscuro) I already have Quintessential, Continued. Looking forward to hearing the sister record. Jasmine - Self-Titled (West 54) Been listening to this rare Latin-fusion band via YT and decided to spring for the whole enchilada. With Bill O'Connell, Steve Berrios, et al. New York Jazz Quartet - Blues For Sarka (Inner City) I collect everything led or co-led by Sir Roland. The music's already in my collection, but I'm upgrading from MP3s to vinyl. Bobby Shew - Outstanding in His Field (Inner City) Taking a flyer on this one, never heard any of it. Interesting line-up with Bill Mays, Bob Magnusson, et al. McCoy Tyner - The Greeting (Milestone) McCoy with George Adams. What's not to like?!?! Joe Venuti & Dave McKenna - Alone at the Palace (Chiaroscuro) I love Venuti's duo album with Marian McPartland. Thought I'd give this one a try. Jessica Williams - Portraits (Adelphi) An early, 2-LP set of solo recordings. Jessica Williams - Nothin' But the Truth (BlackHawk) A trio set from the 80s. Herb Wong's BlackHawk label put out some terrific music back in the day. Another enticement: the LP is still sealed. Quote

Yeah, I have a few imports by Bellaphon with those markings too. It's odd to see "West Germany," but the Cold War wasn't that long ago -- at least for someone my age. (I'm 48.) My wife-to-be was in West Germany visiting relatives in 1990 when Germany was reunified. And all that seems like just "a few years" ago. . . Tempus fugit, eh? By the way, what do you think of Nothin' But the Truth, optatio? Is it a good record? Edited August 15, 2016 by HutchFan Quote

BeBop Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) I love Nothin' But The Truth. Perhaps there's a sentimental "boost", having spent my formative years listening to Jessica and Bud Spangler. But I do think it's a good one. A few years ago, I went to hear Hal Stein who opened with the title tune. We had a nice chat about the recording. Maybe John Wiitala was the link to Stein; he played on Stein's Spirit album.
