jeffcrom
George Lewis - Keeper of the Flame (Storyville). I was completely unaware of this eight-disc set until yesterday, when I saw it in the Louisiana Music Factory. I went back to my hotel, looked up the contents, and saw that it had a bunch of sessions I had been looking for, like the 1954 Jazz at the Ohio Union date, as well as some very cool stuff that I was unfamiliar with. Very glad to have this.
duaneiac
A newly reissued two disc set of this "live" concert recording with bonus tracks from each of the featured performers: Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas, The Miracles and Earl Van Dyke & The Soul Brothers. One would have thought Motown would have reissued this last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the concert, but better late than never. duaneiac
At the Abdullah Ibrahim concert at the SFJazz Center today I bought this 3 CD set I never got to see the Collective that season, so I am interested to hear what fresh takes they had on the music of one of my favorite jazz composers. HutchFan
Just scored this off eBay: Jimmy Rowles & Michael Moore - "Profile": The Music of Henri Renaud (Columbia, 1981) I've wanted to hear this French import for a long time, but I never could find it for a reasonable price -- until today. As good as Skull & Roses is, there are some truly mind-blowing sequences on L&G - specifically the 4th disc which culminates in a 30 minute run from Alligator through the strongest Cold Rain and Snow on record. What comes before and after on the same disc is almost as strong.
StarThrower
I've been sampling Ladies & Gentleman, and I definitely want to pick up a copy. Red Rocks is decent, but it doesn't blow me away. But I'm just getting my feet wet. I never bothered to buy a Dead album for almost 40 years, but now I'm getting into it. I actually plucked 8 CDs out of the Barnes & Noble bargain bin. Mostly studio albums from '67-'74. And I got Red Rocks, and Allah at another store. Kinda wish I would've skipped Allah and got a copy of One From The Vault instead. And I definitely should have skipped Terrapin Station. But these digi-pack re-issues with all of the extra material are a good thing. Anthem Of The Sun is great! But the '71 live album is my favorite. Great material, sound, and wonderful performances. When ready for the ultimate, Dick's Picks 4 (2/13 & 2/14/70) buy 3 CD Fillmore West 1969. As good as it gets before the Workingman Dead and American Beauty songs come forth. Energy level from an alternate universe. then although not in great sound DP 8, Harpur College 5/2/70.
