Larry Kart Posted June 18, 2015 Report Posted June 18, 2015 The other day I ran across at my local Half-Price Books a nearly complete set of the Time-Life Giants of Jazz series, at $1 a box. I already had a lot of them and bought all the ones I didn't have -- as much for the often excellent booklets as for the music, most of which I have elsewhere. Particularly happy to get the Red Norvo box with superb notes by the late DonDeMichael. The late Dick Sudhalter's notes for the Bunny Berigan set look to be top notch, too, and Berigan hasn't been written about much in such detail. Tatum set, interestingly, has notes by A.B. Spellman. Also got the Waller, Bessie Smith, Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Bechet, Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, and Pee Wee Russell. Quote

BFrank Posted June 24, 2015 Report Posted June 24, 2015 Just ordered the Allmans "The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings [6 CD]" from Amazon. Been waiting for the price to come down and today it was $53, so I decided it was time to bite the bullet. Quote
ejp626 Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 I wandered into the HMV tent at the Toronto Jazz Fest. They had a fair number of CDs for a fiver. Reminded me of the good times at Fopp in Cambridge. There was a pairing on Gene Ammons's The Soulful Moods with Nice an' Cool. But the real surprise was George Russell's Stratusphunk paired with The Stratus Seekers for $5! Curiously, this is just as cheap at Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/Jazzplus-Stratusphunk-The-Stratus-Seekers/dp/B0090UH6TO), though quite pricey on Amazon.com.This is in the Jazzplus reissue series from Universal. Probably limited to the EU and Canada. The booklet contains the full art of both albums (though obviously shrunk) and the back cover of each LP is also reproduced. A nice touch. It reminds me a bit of the Mosaic Selects, though I don't think they ever provided a reproduction of the LP back.I'm trying not to add much more to my collection, but I might pick up one or two more of these. Buddha the Magnificent Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 I got to sit about three feet away from the bell of Myron's tenor sax when I saw Brian Blade's Fellowship Band a few years ago. Â Amazing player. Â Went right home and looked him up. Â Looking forward to getting very well acquainted with this one. Quote

erwbol Posted July 14, 2015 Report Posted July 14, 2015 - Cecil Taylor Unit (New World CD)I recently bought a copy of its sibling 3 Phasis from an amazon third party seller and was shipped a CD-R. New World Records has started using these CD-Rs for back catalogue titles without informing their clientel what is and isn't on CD-R. The copy of Cecil Taylor Unit I bought was a real CD. I got a full refund for 3 Phasis and bought a near mint second hand copy on Discogs instead. Quote
