David Ayers Posted May 30, 2015 Report Posted May 30, 2015 Sonny Rollins - The Solo Album jcam, let me know how you go with that one if you get a chance. Have come close to picking it up a couple of times but it gets mixed reviews. A solo Sonny disc is mighty tempting. According to the board it's a dud, dude. Like most things there are easy ways to pre-listen rather than punt - though punting is fun...http://youtu.be/_PwVBEcUUzk Quote

Like most things there are easy ways to pre-listen rather than punt - though punting is fun...http://youtu.be/_PwVBEcUUzk I listened to the album on YouTube (again) last night (not all the way through), and I agree it's bad. If Sonny is that critical of his own playing, what was he thinking releasing this? Not that most of his other Milestone albums do not contain a lot of crap. Quote

Have come close to picking it up a couple of times but it gets mixed reviews. A solo Sonny disc is mighty tempting. Will let you know my impressions when it arrives. I didn't realize the album was so poorly regarded. Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing it. I understand that Youtube has the ability to provide a preview, but to me that kills the joy of discovery. Quote
JSngry Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 The Solo Album is simply Sonny free-associating as he goes, no set list or anything. As "listener-friendly music", yes mileages vary, and understandably so. But as an unfettered look at/into Sonny's "process", I think it's invaluable. Quote
GA Russell Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 My first Sonny Milestone was his 1997 (1996?) Silver City twofer. And I have every Milestone put out after that. I'm quite pleased with every one of them. Are they generally regarded as superior to his pre-Silver City releases, or am I just an easy lay? Quote
HutchFan Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 I think the later Milestone releases are more highly regarded. Generally speaking. Quote
HutchFan Posted June 1, 2015 Report Posted June 1, 2015 (edited) I bought this from jcam earlier today: Technically, I suppose I bought it yesterday -- since it's now after midnight. But you get the idea. Edited June 1, 2015 by HutchFan Quote
jcam_44 Posted June 2, 2015 Report Posted June 2, 2015 Sonny Rollins - The Solo Album jcam, let me know how you go with that one if you get a chance. Have come close to picking it up a couple of times but it gets mixed reviews. A solo Sonny disc is mighty tempting. I have listened to it twice and find it to be excellent. I think if you play you will find it awe-inspiring. I know critics gave the impression that this was nothing more than a practice session, but i would give a leg to have a practice session flow so easily. I find it interesting because it shows his ability to associate ideas, and in such a different and more melodic manner than most solo woodwind albums. My favorite solo woodwind of all-time is Vinny Golia - Clarinet but for far different reasons than this one. Quote

I'm not going to rush out and get it at this stage but i'll keep it in mind next time i do an order. I still really want to explore the Milestone years in more depth. I know there's the Silver City double disc but, you know, i want the full albums for better or worse. Really wish they'd put out a budget-ish box set along the lines of the recent Universal Italy ones. Quote

I got this disc for a song. It cost more than 12x's the disc for shipping. Quote

Every one of those you mention above came off my hutchfan buy list, and, as usual and so far, they are delicious to the ear. I've rarely been disappointed with the stuff you guys recommend. Quote

That's cool. (I agree with you about Alypius. I love how much he loved music. Very inspiring. It's so strange that he's gone.) BTW: I've got those Garbarek/Connors ECMs that you mentioned the other day on my "to buy" list. So it works in both directions. Quote

sidewinder Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 (edited) A whole bundle of the Impulse '2LPs on one CD' series for £3 each at the good ol' London FOPP at Cambridge Circus. Edited June 8, 2015 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 (edited) Oooh! Some good ones too - the 'Oliver Nelson and Friends' (Hank Jones on funky harpsichord !), the Chico Hamilton 'El Chico', the Archie Shepp 'For Losers' and the McCoy Tyner 'Inception/Reaching Forth'. Sound quality seems very good - should have bought even more of them ! Edited June 8, 2015 by sidewinder Quote

Sound quality seems very good - should have bought even more of them ! I'm particularly fond of Inception/Reaching Forth. The one I got from this series (Sonny Rollins) sounds good. It was mastered at Eastside Mastering Studios, Berlin. This series was a European initiative? A lot of them are currently €15 for three CDs at amazon.de (about two thirds of the series). Much better than the US Impulse! Originals from a few years earlier (mostly Kevin Reeves). Those were garbage. Edited June 9, 2015 by erwbol Quote
