brownie Posted June 28, 2013 Report Posted June 28, 2013 This week saw the start of the sales season here. Had skipped the event for the past couple of years but tried my luck this time. Usually this would start with the sales at the Virgin Megastore on the Champs-Elysees but the store closed last month, so I visited the FNAC Montparnasse store instead. It was worth the visit! For a grand total of €44 I got the following CDs: - Sonny Red 2CD (FreshSound) - Tete Montoliu 'Piano for Nuria' (Saba Japan) - Randy Weston 'Zulu' (Mar) - Kenyon Hopkins '4 Classic Albums' (Real Gone Jazz) - Anita O'Day 'Trav'lin' Light' (FreshSound) - Anita O'Day 'Meets the Rhythm Section' (FreshSound) - Elmore James 3CD 'Classic Early Recordings' (Ace) Quote
erwbol Posted June 29, 2013 Report Posted June 29, 2013 £13.50 for a new CD. Not bad considering it's out of print. Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 29, 2013 Report Posted June 29, 2013 Kasse Mady - Kela - Syllart a reissue of 'Koulandjan Kela' and 'Fode' on 1 CD. My copy of 'Koulandjan Kela' was fucked, so I was glad to see this. Oumou Sangare - En tournee Europeenne - Ben BD There's a LOT more power in this than in her early recordings. I've been missing something, as she's matured. Mamou Sidibe - Kanakoroto - SMD Sega Another Wassoulou singer who's improved with age. Youssou ndour - Bercy 2005 - Jololi Youssou ndour - Bercy 2008 - Jololi Coumba Gawlo - Le album live 23 ans de succes - Sabar Not live. It's a 2 CD set, but CD2 sounds and appears to be the same as CD 1 ... Ganda Fadiga - 2008 vol 3 - CK7 Tata Bambo Kouyate - Aou bouna - FCA - no image on web now on to K7s; the boss of Lampe Fall was good enough to give me this lot of oldies for nothing! Coumba Gawlo & Souleymane Faye - Gawlo & Diego - Sabar - I've been after this since it came out in 2003 and I've never seen it. Mr Fall must have had it all that time, though. I must have just missed it because it was filed with the cover facing the wall. Thione Seck - Orientissimo vols 1 & 2 - Syllart - vol 2 isn't on the web, but looks like the CD. MG Quote

Now some K7s; these ones weren't free, but they are all very cheap Pathe Moloko - Sanakuyagal - Syllart (ATA Audio Visual) Binta Laly Sow - Walyabhe Fouta - ATA Audio Visual - no image on web Berevete - Notolan 2000 - D D United - Replacement of old buggered K7. No image on web Kerfala Kante - L'oiseau de Sankara - Super Selection - this is the pic of the CD. A replacement for my buggered K7. Didn't realise I could get a CD of it. A Lark Ascending Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 (edited) I love it when MG does these binges. Makes me feel my record buying habit is relatively modest. I can go and download a couple more today without any feeling of guilt. Edited June 30, 2013 by A Lark Ascending Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Did they put an extra coach on the Eurostar? No doubt the UK balance of payments with the EU dived again.. Rather modest spending - 60 CDs, K7s and LPs for £346.33. Probably wouldn't even get me a DG mono Hank Mobley (assuming I wanted one - sorry Chewy) MG Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 21, 2013 Report Posted July 21, 2013 Not music, but a book with a really shiny, smart, black cover Hi-de-ho; the live of Cab Calloway - Alyn Shipton It was in a list of books someone here linked to a few weeks ago. Haven't started it yet, but I love the cover so far Came a week or so ago, but I forgot to post it MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 23, 2013 Report Posted July 23, 2013 Joseph Bodin de Boismortier - Serenades Francaises etc - Naxos Nice bit in the sleeve notes - Boismortier was regarded as a bit too popular for the hoity-toity In his Essay on Ancient and Modern Music of 1780 the celebrated theoretician Jean-Benjamin de La Borde gave a realistic portrait of the composer: "Boismortier appeared at a time when only simple and easy music was in fashion. This competent musician took only too much advantage of this tendency and devised, for the many, airs and duets in great numbers which were performed on the flute, the violins, oboes, bagpipes and hurdy-gurdies… He so abused the ingenuousness of his numerous buyers that, in the end, the following was said of him: “Happy is hes Boismortier, whose fertile quill Each month, without pain, conceives a new air at will.” Boismortier, for lack of a better answer to his critics, would always answer: 'I am earning money'". Now THAT'S a musician I can admire! The Sonny Stitt of his age. MG Quote
