The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 Vol 2 of the Rail Band set came this morning Rail Band - Belle epoque vol 2 - Syllart Then I zoomed into Cardiff and went into tthe Oxfam shop for the first time. A bit overpriced, but maybe not - original Beatles LPs for 40-50 quid, is that expensive? Anyway, I picked up this Great Wilson Pickett hits - Marble Arch. This is a reissue of his Double L album 'It's too late', which I bought back in the day, and has really fine stuff, including 'If you need me'. Sold when I was poor, and have never seen since, so I'm pretty glad to have got this. Looks in fine nick, too. No chance to play it yet though. MG Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 5, 2013 Report Posted February 5, 2013 And now for something completely different Joey Dee & the Starliters - Doin' the twist at the Peppermint Lounge/Back at the Peppermint Lounge - twistin' - Roulette (Sequel UK) I remember this band as being exceptionally enthusiastic but limited. However, I was always interested because it was led by a wild organist which, for 1961/2, was quite unusual. The back story is that 3 future members of the Rascals were in this band, but a bit later than these records, as was Jimi Hendrix. Very rough music. 'Hot pastrami (with mashed potatoes)' which I used ot have on 45 back in the day is kind of amazing to me now because I never noticed it was based on the 'Green onions' riff - over a year before that record came out! Did Booker T and Carlton Latimor (the organist with the Starliters) crib it from the same older source, or (heaven forfend) did Booker T get it from here? ANyway, it's crude but enjoyable. All but one of the covers (there are only 2 originals) are from black music, including 3 Bill Doggett hits. The band had GOOD taste. MG Quote
Head Man Posted February 6, 2013 Report Posted February 6, 2013 Been looking for a copy of this for a long time. Finally snagged one for a reasonable(ish) price. Quote

cih Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 Picked this up in Whitby's 'Folk Devils' yeterday - a recent Dust-to-Digital release, late seventies field recordings. Really great stuff, with some one-string material which sounds almost avant garde. Comes in a nice book of essays, photos etc Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 A few nice things over the past week or two Royal Band de Thies - Kadior demb - Teranga Beat One of my favourite Mbalax bands. Previously unissued material from late '70s or early '80s Platters - Heaven on earth - Mercury 3 CD set of almost all their Mercury material. Very good mostly. The album sides that I hadn't heard before are generally pretty good, with good bands behind them. I 've wished flr a long time that Jug, Gator or Houston Person had recorded 'Twilight time'. And, on the subject of Rock & Roll Elvis Presley - Elvis at Sun - RCA oh, and some no 'count jazz stuff Sidney Bechet Mosaic Select MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 Thought I'd put this on. Jim Sangrey will dig it, if no one else MG Quote
mjazzg Posted February 22, 2013 Report Posted February 22, 2013 Christ Potter The Sirens I know some people think he's heaven sent as a saxophonist but that's going a bit far unconvincing album for me, sounds better in the passages when the leader's not playing by and large - but I nearly always have a "technique over content" reaction to Potter (exceptions seem to be with Motian) Quote
sidewinder Posted February 24, 2013 Report Posted February 24, 2013 Leibman/Beirach Mosaic Select. A bit 'after the event' and now OOP but enjoyed the 'Pendulum' so much that I figured it would be best to pounce before prices start to get silly. Also took the opportunity to pick up some near-OOP Singles I am missing (Wiley, JJ/Kai, Rich, Merrill). My excuse -the £ is dropping off a cliff.. Quote
