BillF Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 A bunch of LPs from PeteB turned up this morning. What with water being intermittently cut off for the last couple of days, I only just managed to get to hear them now. Hydraulic record player! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Just found this on e-bay. The Kansas City Melodyaires - Softly the night is falling - Songbird Hugely expensive - $45 inc post - but I've been after this since 1969 !!!!!! MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Well, with my New Month's Resolution to buy fewer records in December leading me to buy more expensive ones , I just found this on AMazon UK Tommy Dean - Deanie Boy plays hot Rhythm & Blues - Tommy Dean - Miracle, VJ & States cuts (Official, Denmark) I saw this in Tower in London when it came out but I'd spent all my money, so I decided that I could get it from Spillers when I got home. However, a week later Official had closed, and copies have been very scarce. I saw one on AMazon UK a couple of years ago for a hundred quid and didn't bite . But I just found one there now for only 17! Wow! Dean was an important St Louis organist - the man who influenced Sam Lazar and with whom Grant Green developed his style. This LP doesn't contain the tracks from Dean's VJ session with Green, which have never been released. MG Quote

They should have flown you to St Louis for a week of research and partying. Do you know if the VJ sessions survive? Quote
kh1958 Posted December 1, 2012 Report Posted December 1, 2012 Ordered from cdbaby: Melissa Aldana, Second Cycle, and Barbara Dennerlein, Spiritual Movement No. 3 Quote

Michael Cuscuna was into the Vee-Jay files and achives a few years ago and I can't believe he wouldn't have done at least something. MG Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 1, 2012 Report Posted December 1, 2012 This arrived today, having done a fast swim across the Atlantic. Grant Green - Live at the Holy Barbarian, St Louis, 1959 - Uptown Good sleeve note about the background, and fascinating newspaper clips. But they still don't acknowlege Lazar's debt to Tommy Dean. GG seems to have been using the Gibson at the last gig at the bar. Sounds like he was for the recording, too, though I don't really know. MG Quote

B. Goren. Posted December 6, 2012 Report Posted December 6, 2012 Art Tatum Group Masterpieces Volume Six Paul, what you need is the complete set of Group Masterpieces. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 6, 2012 Report Posted December 6, 2012 I think it was Stefan Wood who posted that he'd got this, some months ago. Guelewar - Halleli N'Dakarou - Touba Auto K7 (Teranga Beat) I thought it was the Xaley N'dakarou K7 with some bonus tracks. Now I've got it, I see Xaley N'dakarou was issued as a 2 K7 set, of which I've only got one. Now that's the way to do reissues! Interesting sleeve note all in all. Never knew Moussa Ngom came from The Gambia (though I suspected it). Thanks for the info, Stefan. MG Quote
paul secor Posted December 6, 2012 Report Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) Art Tatum Group Masterpieces Volume Six Paul, what you need is the complete set of Group Masterpieces. Possibly, but I'm not a huge Tatum fan and I'd rather explore piecemeal. Also, I find that if I get a box, I'm less likely to take it off the shelf and listen to it - even listen to individual recordings from it. Edited December 6, 2012 by paul secor Quote
mikelz777 Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Second Spin had a 12 hour, 40% off sale yesterday when you purchased $30 (pre-discounted price) in used CDs so these came out to be less than $4 each. I think my CD collection is reaching a saturation point. Even at these prices, I really had to work at it to find enough titles I was willing to buy. Johnny Cash - Bootleg Volume 1: Personal File Leon Redbone - Christmas Island Best of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong Jimmy McGriff - Greatest Hits Bela Fleck - Tales From The Acoustic Planet Quote

BillF Posted December 11, 2012 Report Posted December 11, 2012 Interesting - I have this: As a download, It didn't come with any cover art, but I preferred the look of the 50s version, which JohnS says is from the British Esquire label. Quote

Ted O'Reilly Posted December 12, 2012 Report Posted December 12, 2012 I've been enjoying Ed Bickert, Mike Murley and Steve Wallace on a just-released CD ("Test Of Time") of material recorded in 1999. The trio had been recorded live at a Toronto club, but the results were not up to everyone's expectations. Though a live record was desired, there wasn't going to be an opportunity to do in the near future, so they did a couple of sessions at the producer's (Barry Elmes) modest home setup. But before those tapings were mixed, an opportunity came up to again record at a club. Since a "Live" release was what they originally wanted, they jumped on it and made "Live at The Senator" (Cornerstone CRST CD 113) which won a Juno -- the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy. The studio sessions lay fallow for a decade until Elmes was making safety copies of the (Artist-Owned) catalogue, and knew they should be released. For those who love Ed Bickert's guitar playing (and who wouldn't?) these tracks are especially important as they represent some new treasures of a talent that hasn't been heard since his retirement more than a decade ago. http://www.cornersto...s/whatsnew.html and http://mikemurley.com/ for more, including a link to a CBC site that lets you hear examples...
