This arrived today. Will listen tonight. I heard the tapes 30+ years ago and have been waiting....

Sidemen are Don Cherry, Clifford Jordan and Ed Blackwell.

These turned up this morning

Ray Bryant - MCMLXX - Atlantic (Collectables)

One I was thinking of getting from the new batch of Japanese reissues, but this was cheaper at Amazon UK. Another nice commercial release.

Ricky Ford - Saxotic stomp - Muse

Listening now; a lot going on, but accessible. Glad I got it.

Harry Edison/Buddy Tate - Swing summit - Candid

Looking forward to hearing this next.

Last two from Jazztropic's sale.

Clifford Jordan - Soul fountain - Vortex (Wounded Bird)

Jimmy Smith - Hobo flats - Verve (Originals series) Glad someone pointed out this had been released on CD; never got the LP back in the day, only the 45.

Milt Jackson - Ballads & blues/Bags & flutes - Atlantic (Collectables)

Chuck Willis - The complete Chuck Willis 1951-1957 - JSP

Listening to disc 2 of this now. Really glad I got this and didn't buy the LPs. Seems to have everything he released, including his two 1958 sessions :)

Generally slowed way down, but I did order the Vogue recordings of Don Byas and then the Szell Decca/Philips box set:028947567806_300.jpg.

This last one is a particularly sore point as I ordered it through an Amazon vendor. It never turned up. I complained and they claimed (eventually) they sent a replacement copy. I doubt very much that either was sent, but the length of time had gotten so long there wasn't much to do other than post a negative review. But it is going out of print, so I figured I had better act now if I ever wanted it.

Finally "caught up" on new listening enough to order Chuck's new Hal Russell CD, as well as the one Von Freeman and the one Roscoe Mitchell Nessas I somehow didn't have. I'm looking forward to it - Russell's ECM albums take the top of my head off.

Rudresh Mahanthappa - Samdhi

First CD I've purchased from a real brick-n-mortar store in a very long time.

Still not sure what to think about this one, it will need repeated spins. I usually love anything that Rudresh does, but this one confused me on first pass.

A bunch of LPs from PeteB turned up this morning. What with water being intermittently cut off for the last couple of days, I only just managed to get to hear them now.

Various Artists - Live at the Apollo 1944-1947 - Everybody's

Phew! Some cracking playing from a bunch of great big bands, and even the Duke and Basie are overshadowed by Erskine Hawkins!

PICT0038-1.JPG

Erskine Hawkins - Swingin' in Harlem - Vocalion (Tax, Sweden)

Very nice early sessions from 1936-38. Never heard any of this stuff before.

Lionel Hampton & his orchestra - 1948 - Alamac

Live broadcast stuff with the band veering towards, and sometimes leaping into, bebop. Fats Navarro & Benny Bailey to blame :D

Arnett Cobb - Arnett Cobb is back - Progressive

Every bit as good as you think it should be.
