etherbored Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 How's the box set, Jeff? yea, is it as loosy-goosy as some people lead me to believe? can you comment on how focused you feel the sides are? i've stayed away from -all- of the jam session series, but the thought of being able to have them all in one place is very tempting. plus it's not in a sardine can like the parker set... -e- Quote
Guy Berger Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 (edited) Due to the "Fantasy panic" I broke a personal rule about how many CDs I buy in a month and picked up 10 CDs. And I'll probably be buying at least 10-20 more titles next week. I feel pretty guilty about it. I guess I'll just have to cut down on CD purchases as a result. Anyway here's round 1: Jaki Byard: Sunshine of My Soul, Quartet: Live!, Last from Lennie's Woody Shaw: Blackstone Legacy, Song of Songs Steve Lacy: Evidence, Reflections Oliver Nelson: Straight Ahead Cecil Taylor: Lookin' Ahead Lee Konitz: Duets Edited December 3, 2004 by Guy Berger Quote

AfricaBrass Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 Andrew Hill - Dance With Death (last week) The Verve Granz Jam Session box I hadn't bought a jazz cd since last spring... it sure felt good. How's the box set, Jeff? I think it's great! I've been doing a lot of driving lately and I've really enjoyed listening to the set on my road trips. Quote
AfricaBrass Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 How's the box set, Jeff? yea, is it as loosy-goosy as some people lead me to believe? can you comment on how focused you feel the sides are? i've stayed away from -all- of the jam session series, but the thought of being able to have them all in one place is very tempting. plus it's not in a sardine can like the parker set... -e- Of course it isn't as focused as some of the classic Verve sessions by these performers, but it is very enjoyable. But I'm biased, I love this kind of stuff. I figure if it says "Jam Sessions" on the box, then I'm going to get some jam sessions. It's funny, the first time through the set, I hadn't read the liners yet. So, I was guessing who was who as I listened. It was a lot of fun. I did pretty good with my guesses, but not as good as I had hoped (my jazz ears have gotten kind of rusty). Plus... the price is right... and the packaging is decent (for Verve). I'm a little nervous about the bottom of the set getting beat up, but I'm sure with a little care it will be fine. Quote

neveronfriday Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 BLUES, BOOGIE+BOP (1940s Mercury sessions, 7 CDs) ... got it cheap on eBay (under $40) in excellent condition. Looking forward to it after some posters all over this board here recommended the set. Cheers! Bought myself a second still shrink-wrapped Duke Ellington Reprise Box (German version of Mosaic) yesterday for 20 something (investment). I'll sit on it for two years or so. Have been lucky in other areas as well. Somehow, people don't feel like bidding at the moment (I paid a laughable 24 Euro for another copy for of the Hampton/Peterson Verve sessions box ... my dad'll get that one for X-mas. This was my fourth attempt at getting another set ... they usually went for around $70 - 100. All things come to those who wait). Cheers! Quote

Absolutely! I love Ted Templeman's production. I've had those two on wax for years, and I've completely worn them out. The CD remasters aren't bad. Red Streamliner--awww yeah! Glad I'm not alone! sidewinder Posted December 5, 2004 Report Posted December 5, 2004 (edited) Just picked up a 2CD set by Tubby Hayes called 'The Tempo Years' on Jasmine. It has some interesting live amateur recording 1969 Tubby big band material in addition to the classic Tempo material (even if some dork does shout 'hello mum' down the mike in the middle of one of Tubby's solos.... ).
